...and I'm not bored yet! I'm actually kinda wishing I'd taken the full year off work so that I could do the transition to solids entirely myself, rather than daycare 2 days a week where they haven't heard of baby led solids (and probably don't really have the staff in the baby room to watch her while she eats something non-mashed).
She has started tasting solid foods; a couple of weeks ago she was really going for my banana so I let her have some, and she swallowed it. She's since tried apple, potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, (all cooked and fork-mashed) and avocado. Haven't bothered with puree-ing on the grounds that human babies learnt to eat just fine before food processors, and a fork gets about the same consistency as would be achieved by me pre-chewing it for her. Next on list I think will be broccoli, then maybe mushy rice and oatmeal porridge. So far she has liked everything, which is encouraging. She is of course still breastfeeding the same amount, as a few spoons of vegies once or twice a day don't make much caloric impact.
She's so close to sitting up by herself, just needs to work on her balance. She hasn't tried to crawl in a while - she kept getting frustrated with her inability to move forward. Current favoured method of locomotion is lying on her back, she lifts her bum in the air and scoots over, then moves her legs, repeat. She can wiggle in an arc around her head with this method, and combined with rolling, can get herself off playmats and onto the floor surprisingly quickly!
She still does lots of 'aaaahhhhh' vocalising, and we're also getting the occasional 'buh' and 'guh' which is interesting. She seems to love squealing at really high pitches... I'm not sure if this is a good thing. If there is a lull in the adult conversation she will insert herself into it, often quite loudly, which is adorable but not so good for things like choir rehearsals. I wonder when she will be able to understand the concept of an 'inside voice'?
We've been staying with mum and dad for three weeks now and I think she recognises them - certainly she gives them big smiles. She is fascinated by the dogs, though we haven't let them interact much - she grabs their fur, and would probably try to put a handful of dog in her mouth if allowed to!
We stayed at the beach last week and she had her first swim. I'm not sure if she enjoyed it; she didn't smile, but didn't cry either; just had on her 'data input' face of serious concentration. She also tried to eat sand, of course. I suspect the beach will be a lot more fun for her next year.
There were probably more things I intended to put in this update, but I can't think what they were - I'm guessing no-one else is interested in what solid food does to breastfed baby poo. Speaking of which, D has asked me to order a Little Squirt to aid in his nappy-rinsing duties. So I shall post this and go surf online nappy shops :)
