Just got home from Dream Theater.

So amazing.

There are just no words. I know that's what you all wanted to hear, but I'm going to give it a bit of an attempt anyway. Not in a Virginia Woolf sort of way, though.

Mike Portnoy, John Myung, Jordan Rudess, and John Petrucci are possibly the most dynamic quartet ever placed on this earth. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John running a close (not so very close) second. Seriously, they are so 1)technically proficient and 2)musically in tune with one another... it's amazing. Overwhelming, but also incredibly enjoyable.

Also amazing? James LaBrie's live vocal range. Dinang.

And finally... Scott Rockenfield from Queensryche got up and played a set with Mike Portnoy on that amazing set... I tried to count... I think 11 cymbals, 4 bass drums, at least 9 toms, 1 hi hat that I saw, and all those little doodads he added. I'm not a drumming fan generally but this was just fantastic. They worked perfectly together.

Yum.

They played a lot of songs that I didn't know, which made me sad. I recognized a little more than half of them. But I think that besides me, everyone in the room was a die hard fan of Dream Theater.

I don't think I've ever been as impressed by a live performance of anything, including Midori at Benaroya last year. And man, she rocks.
