MariannaS. This past Sunday Alasdair and I went a couple stops north on the overland train (Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City line) to visit our friends Dan and Jenny and their new son, 3 week old Lachlan.
Although I am one of the oldest of all the cousins on my Mom's side of the family, I never really had much interaction with babies. Our closest relatives were 3 hours away in Detroit, so I only got to meet my new cousins when they were several months old. Because of this I am pretty scared of babies - scared of accidentally hurting them, or of getting hurt by them (like poop or spit).
The two newborns have shattered my preconceptions. They were not smelly and I was surprised to discover that they only spit up a white milky goo, which makes sense and I'm disappointed that I hadn't thought that through before.
I had Lachlan on my lap for an hour while all he did was sleep peacefully. It wasn't that scary.
Visiting the babies didn't make me want to have one though; they are too much work.
