Bat-Mite was created by
Bill Finger and
Sheldon Moldoff in 1959 to add some more humor into the Batman series, which by that time was already pretty campy to begin with. He made a dozen or so appearances and then faded away along with all the rest of DC's comical sidekicks (almost every one in the Justice League had one), but that didn't stop the folks at
Filmation from reviving him as a supporting character in their 1977 series THE NEW ADVENTURES OF BATMAN.
Sadly, the Filmation cartoon was probably the highpoint of the Mite's popularity. The current Batman comics and movies are geared towards intelligent adult audiences, and things like humor and having fun are just not acceptable to the fans.
Don't let that stop you from enjoying this story, which has a whole lot of fun in it. It has Batman, Robin, Batwoman, Bat-Mite, and a ridiculous villain called the Hobby Robber. It even has a giant penny in it.
