Wow, seems everybody on the FList is very sleepy lately. But also very busy. And also concerned with recent public policy developments. And also watching Project Runway and/or Top Chef (which makes me glad I went to the double feature at
geogal's the other night, because now I see what all the fuss is about). All of which makes for some longish and no doubt very interesting postage which I'm looking forward to reading. And possibly commenting on, long after the conversation's over of course. :P
But first I have to get some fricking SLEEP. Tohru's had the runs for the past few days, which has been quite traumatic for both the carpet and the sleep schedule. Mom came over while I was at work the other day with her magic Car(pet)Wash thingy -- she just can't help herself -- so the carpet is just fine now. I thought going to bed early last night and sleeping like an extremely dead ROCK would do the same for me, but no such luck. So while I knew exactly why I was so exhausted yesterday, today it's a disheartening mystery. And while I'd heard that torrential rain normally works wonders for allergies because it washes all the pollen away, today I've had the sinus headache that just would not die... causing me to take a second allergy pill, which zonked me down to levels even lower than yesterday. It's a glamorous life I lead, wot.
I'm happy though, because things seem to be levelling out now so that neither the headache nor the sleepiness is overwhelming. Or maybe I'm happy because I'm just too drugged to know what's really going on. Whatev. :P
So Oni-Con looks like a wash this year, because I don't have anybody to go with and I'm not quite up to braving the George R. by meself - but I can't quite muster up the regret of a true fangirl over it. OTOH, I would love to hit the dealer room with my newly waxing checkbook and pick up some good schwag. Maybe even some doujinshi! 0_0; And I would like to hear some panels. So, I'll see if they have an actual schedule up yet, and see how I feel in the morning.
In other news, I bought 15 used DVDs from somebody at work who was cleaning out their collection. This is my second such haul, and even though I was a bit late and missed some of the more popular titles, I still think I did pretty good:
1. Appleseed (the remake) - Limited Collector's Edition (one word: SCORE. I resisted getting this at Best Buy last week, and now it's mine for a lot less. The little booklet inside is missing, but big whoop.
2. The Abyss Special Edition - has both the original and the wack director's cut that changes the whole perspective of the thing.
3. Great Expectation - the newer version with Gwyneth & Ethan. Because Anne Bancroft rocks.
4. Signs - The one I hesitated most over, but got anyway because I figure I need to own at least one M. Night movie, and because I <3 Joaquin Phoenix (not as much as I <3ed his poor dead brother, but oh well).
5. The Punisher - even though it has John Travolta in it, because I remember going "oooo" at the preview even after I figured out that Thomas Jane's amazing pecs were really a skull print on his t-shirt.
6. A Bridge Too Far - 1977 WWII flick for my dad, but damn, what a cast. I love Gene Hackman.
7. Predator - because when Alien vs. Predator came out, I didn't know what Predator was. Hey, it was $5.
8. Identity - Special Edition - John Cusack. Supposed to be good. Good cast, "2 thumbs up".
9. Girl With A Pearl Earring - Colin Firth. Tom Wilkinson. yay0rs. Also, haven't actually seen Miss Scarlett in anything yet. And some friends of mine hada small print of the painting in their house - I always looked at it and wondered about it, but never knew it was famous until the book came out.
10. Hellboy - 2-Disc Special Edition - Again, heard it was good. Although the horn stumps look like aviator goggles to me. @_@
11. Minority Report - Widescreen - Praise from a highly discriminating friend overcame the presence of Tom Cruise. Plus I like Samatha Morton (didn't like her Jane Eyre, but loved her Harriet Smith). Haven't seen much with Colin Farrell. Like the premise, maybe, I think.
12. Friday Night Lights - Widescreen - Supposedly fantastic, and while I'm not a huge sports fan, I do like a good sports movie. This one's for my dad, but it's one I'll probably like watching with him.
13. Citizen Kane - Remastered - 2-disc set. The 2nd disk is a 2-hour documentary called The Battle Over Citizen Kane, nominated for Best Doc. Oscar in 1995. Since so many people have called this ZOMG The Best Movie Evar, I tried to watch it once - and fell asleep. I dunno, I was tired, or in the wrong mood. But I loved Welles' Mr. Rochester. And this has the lovely matte paper case. ^_^
14. House Of Sand And Fog - Widescreen - Wow, I didn't notice how many Widescreens I was getting (certainly they weren't advertised as such) - yay! Like Jennifer Connelly, LOVE Ben Kingsley. Basically from Sneakers, but love is love. Supposed to be good if not great.
15. Smilla's Sense Of Snow - I like Julia Ormond, except for that whole unfortunate Guinevere thing with Richard Gere. Also like Gabriel Byrne. And ice and snow, or at least the idea and the aesthetic of them. I think it's set in Iceland...? Anyway, I've seen this one a couple of times, and always liked it for some reason I can't quite explain. I haven't read the book and have a feeling Ormond may have been way miscast... but I still like it.
So! I've seen only 4 of these. Opinions are welcome, even if you think something sucked, because most of these were $5 - not much more than a rental.
While I was still typing this, the boss came by and asked if he could borrow The Abyss. Heh.
