I've been thinking about Flag 8 for a few days now, and after setting aside my doting fandom, I do have some thoughts to share, in light of comments I see from others regarding questions of how to impact the flag.
So, my suggestions:
1. If you find yourself thinking, "How do I support/oppose flag 8?" Stop! Think instead, "What is my character doing?" This is a chance to tap your focus reserves, or your prop's, and signify your actions with focus. Instead of spending PRECIOUS FOCUS on an arbitrary position, spend it on yourself! So, think not "Do I like Julian?" but rather, "I'm helping tackle problem X, and this is how I'm doing it!". Or, "To support this evil plan of mine, I'm going to need X." (where X is something you can reasonably get without a fuss, and may affect Amber.)
2. If you can be dramatic, be dramatic! Use it to drive RP, or consider long-delayed RP that will enable you to chuck a token up there. Stop stalling and DO something.
3. Ask a friendly player (or, perhaps, a GM?) for advice. Bouncing an idea off of someone is a great way to enrich it.
4. Color is a meaningful choice in flag 8! If it doesn't sound like a support or a oppose to you, but it still feels significant, probably chuck your token into color.
5. Big plans come in small steps. Though it wasn't necessarily intended that way, flag 8 looks like a great place for you to throw up tokens signifying your progress on your longterm agenda - provided the acts toward that progress are relevant in the context of the flag.
6. 'I don't have a prop, therefor I can't effect the flag.'
7. 'I don't care about Julian, therefor this flag isn't for me.'
8. 'I don't hate Amber, so I can't oppose it'.
There are lots of ways you can pursue self-interest that might harsh Amber's mellow that don't involve bloodshed or arbitrary jerkishness, and lots of ways to support flag 8 without being a Julian supporter. See #1. This is a flag that lets you be yourself!
You don't have to be political to support, oppose, or color. If you're doing stuff, and it feels significant, find a way to express it, explain what sort of impact it has, and chuck it up on the flagpole.
A rolling version of flag 8 would be pretty cool.
