I should, uh, probably pay for Flickr before my Italy pictures start dropping from the photostream. People seem to like those - I've even had a request for one to be published in a Spanish magazine, as part of a feature on Turin cafes. (In general Flickr stats confirm what one would suspect, namely that given the choice, people would rather look at pictures of pretty girls and food than anything else. XD In History of Western Painting 101 these are known as "mythological scenes" and "still lifes".)
Not the full recording complement, as far as I could tell - four of them plus Bebel's bassist/guitarist from her previous tour - but they played very well to a small and increasingly enthusiastic crowd. No pictures, but you can tell when there are Brazilians in the audience because they're not afraid to dance.
These guys have awesome instrumental chops. They're also selling the best tour t-shirts I've ever seen (in colourful flower prints), though I ended up getting the CD instead.
Forro in the Dark essentially acted as Bebel's supporting band. Many of the songs turned into longer, partly improvised jams, especially the older ones that were by rights more familiar. I really liked what she did with "August Day Song" -> "Os Novos Yorkinos"; a live album would be awesome at this point. XD
The venue is the size of my living room, and has the advantage of a sloping wooden floor so those standing in the back can see well (though I stayed up against the stage - it wasn't particularly crowded, probably no more than 250 attendees counting those on the balcony).
The stage setting was also designed for maximum intimacy, almost living room like, with a chair and a side table and a rug and a glass of wine (and this clicky percussion instrument like a handful of wooden beads, that you can't quite see here).
The arrangements were much mellower and more acoustic than the set I heard on her previous tour, which was beats-heavy and dancey compared to the album (it was also at the Metropolis, a larger venue - they'd set up seats but people rushed up to the stage and started dancing). There was a laptop playing loops somewhere behind the drum kit, but it wasn't the focus. Several numbers were just Bebel + acoustic guitar.
The set list, going by memory (sorry for lack of accents):
Close to You / Bring Back the Love / Caçada / August Day Song / Os Novos Yorkinos / Sem Contençao / Night and Day (she was singing Águas de Março for a bit XD) / Aganju / Um Secundo / Memento || encore: Samba da Bençao / Cadê Você / Close Your Eyes
Introducing the players.
In other news, I feel a lot better now that I've let the
blind_go deadline lapse. XD;; It was a strategic misstep to sign up for this round, I think - I love to read AUs and crossovers but I'm not very good at writing them. Should repost the poll now that the options have changed.
