We have kicked off the 2017-18 busking program for the
T.C. High School Orchestra! Last weekend was our first official busking date, with seven students performing outside the King Street Metro station during evening rush hour. They played for 90 minutes and pulled in $362.36 in donations, to be used toward the orchestra's spring trip to Chicago.
Eliza, Kristiansen, Thomas, Jonathan, Nichole, Teddy, and Emory, all sophomores in the orchestra, played Dvorak's New World Symphony, Libertango, the Patriotic Medley, Bach's Organ Fugue in G Minor, and more. The orchestra director had provided some simple arrangements, but most of the kids preferred the busking binders I brought along, that I'd compiled several years ago, when five of the seven were busking for the George Washington Middle School orchestra.
Upcoming dates include this Saturday afternoon on the boardwalk near the Torpedo Factory, Sunday, October 29, following the Del Ray Halloween Parade, and Election Day outside the Chinquapin Rec Center precinct. (That one will be combined with a bake sale.) If you're a TC Williams orchestra student or parent, check the
TCW Orchestra Facebook page for links to sign up for future busking events.
(The starling fluttered over when the teens started playing and hopped around nearby, apparently listening, until a train arrived and commuters poured out of the station, forcing it to fly away.)
