- 1889 - Anna Akhmatova, Ukrainian born Russian modernist poet who is better known by the pen name Anna Akhmatova; one of the most acclaimed writers in the Russian canon.
- 1894 - Alfred Kinsey, American biologist, professor of biology and entomology, and sexologist; author of the controversial Kinsey Reports; founder of the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University, now known as the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.
- 1921 - Theodore Taylor, American author of fiction and nonfiction books for children and teens.
- 1928 - Michael Shaara, American author of science fiction and historical fiction who won the Pulitzer Prize for The Killer Angels.
- 1936 - Richard Bach, American author best known for his 1970 bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
- 1958 - Steven Dietz, one of America's most widely produced and published playwrights.
- 1975 - Markus Zusak, Australian author whose books are international bestsellers; best known for The Book Thief.
