Another Forgotten Birthday

Dec 02, 2014 18:26

Heidi sat at the kitchen table waiting for her husband to come home from work. After spending the day with her children Nathan's mother kindly agreed to taking the boys off her hands for the evening so that she and Nathan could celebrate her birthday in peace ( Read more... )

"May I?" Nathan asked graciously, glad to stand after being on his knees for so long; he wasn't as young as he used to be, and that old injury to his leg would have started to ache after a while. He stepped out of his pants and underwear, and let his wife lead him to the bed they hadn't shared for what felt like forever ( ... )

He was a bit older but still so handsome and he always knew just what to say but his last words did make Heidi snicker. "All day baby? Were you that sure this was going to happen?" She supposed she had been dropping hints at the fact that a reconciliation of that nature was on the table, she had been touching him a lot more, Heidi had missed having contact with him.

"Nathan!" Heidi cried out, she loved it when he got like this, it felt like they were the only two people in existence. She moaned and bit her lip because while she wanted to be loud, Heidi knew too much noise would wake their children and she couldn't have that. "Love you," Heidi told Nathan, kissing him deeply. A few strokes later and it was over, to say she was disappointed was an understatement but she supposed she couldn't really blame Nathan, he had been so worked up she was surprised he had lasted that that long. She met his eyes. "Doing okay there, stud?"

"Oh, Jesus Christ, I'm sorry, honey," Nathan said, the flush that crept to his face and neck now not one of passion but of embarrassment. He had just known that was going to happen. Sex hadn't felt that good in a long, long time, probably because he was either totally plastered or just going through the motions with some other woman. Sobriety, along with its perks, also had its drawbacks ( ... )

It wasn't often one got to see Nathan Petrelli embarrassed, he always liked to be in control of a situation and when he got frustrated a little vein popped out on his hairline, Heidi remembered seeing it that time he tried to put Simon's crib together, she saw it again now.

"Babe, it's okay. Maybe next time I'll seduce you." While it had been a valiant effort, Heidi believed that she would do a much better job and that if she were the in control one, Nathan would last longer. Heidi squeaked when Nathan pulled her close, if she was honest she didn't need his cock, while it was very nice, his mouth and hands were more than enough to get her off.

"Nathan!" Heidi cried out as she came against his fingers, her body shaking from the sensation. "God, you were always so good at that." She kissed him fiercely, smiling. "Did I wear you out?" She wrapped her arm around him, snuggling into him. "I'm going to put that down as a success." She hoped he thought so too.

Peter spent the next week trying to keep himself occupied, work his primary focus. He pulled shift after shift not only with his regular hospice patient, but with the elderly at the nursing home. When he got to the nursing home on Tuesday afternoon, he spent twenty minutes in the bathroom crying when he found out the little old lady with Alzheimer's had passed away in her sleep right after he left the evening before. He had a feeling though, as he rinsed his face with cold water, that that wasn't the only reason for his tears ( ... )

It had been three weeks and while Peter and Nathan seemed okay not being on speaking terms, it did not sit well with Heidi. She needed to talk to him and what, exactly? Apologize? No, because she was not sorry for her actions, she slept with Peter and she had enjoyed it, she had decided to give Nathan another chance and it was the right thing to do.

Sunday morning Heidi decided to go out and do errands while Nathan stayed at home with the boys and one such errand took her near Peter's building, no harm in visiting, right? Once she was inside she started to feel nervous, not about seeing Peter but about something else like there was electricity in the air, Heidi wondered maybe their empathic bond had reestablished itself. On her way up to Peter's apartment, she passed a tall blonde man in the hall who nodded as he passed, Heidi took particular interest in him because one, he was gorgeous and two he had seemed to have come from Peter's apartment? How very odd...well, maybe not that odd, Heidi had always suspected that perhaps Peter ( ... )

Peter couldn't very well slam the door in Heidi's face, so he ushered her inside quickly. "Come inside, sit down. Sorry about the mess. Sorry about this," he said, gesturing at himself. "I'll be right back."

Though he couldn't pinpoint the exact moment that the empathic link between himself and Heidi had reestablished itself, he was slightly surprised that he hadn't sensed her approach at all. It was then that a range of emotions that weren't his own flooded over him like a douse of ice water.

She's happy, in love with my brother all over again. She's upset that I wouldn't call them back, worried about me. She's appreciating that good-looking guy who just left my apartment, how my ass looks right now -- He tried not to look like he was making a mad dash for his bedroom, not bothering to shut the door as he rushed to put on some clothes. He grabbed the cleanest pair of jeans he saw, the ones on top of the pile, and then dug around in a dresser drawer for a t-shirt, hoping that the embarrassment burning his cheeks would fade before ( ... )

Heidi was laughing to herself about the whole situation, Peter was so cute when he was flustered and the fact that he didn't close the door while changing well that was an up for her. She got the feeling that he didn't want to talk about it, actually, she felt that Peter didn't want her there at all but she wasn't about just get up and leave so he could save face ( ... )

Peter's head ached and his stomach churned; he was actually hungover! Was his life really in such turmoil that it was affecting the cache of special abilities that he had come to embrace, and sometimes even rely on? Peter tried to push down the anger, but Heidi's brutal honesty and poor impression of him just made it worse ( ... )

Peter went for the bottle and Heidi rolled her eyes, really she thought he was better than this. She declined his offer to drink, it was too early besides she was trying to stay away from alcohol for Nathan's sake. Heidi let Peter get his anger out, being able to feel it was a crazy disturbing ride which made Heidi wish she did take the offer of alcohol ( ... )

Peter listened to Heidi talking about his brother, and while he understood everything she was saying, her voice began to sound like it was coming from further and further away. He swiped the tears from his eyes because they were blurring his vision; after he did so, his vision did not clear. What was going on?

Heidi had a white bath towel wrapped around his hand and wrist, and Peter didn't even remember cutting himself. It didn't even hurt.

Nothing hurt, actually. The tears were drying on his face now, and he didn't even remember why he'd been crying. He didn't feel sad, or angry, or even lonely. Heidi was with him. He felt calm and peaceful. Relieved. Like maybe he should go to sleep and it would all be better tomorrow.

But I just got up. It's my birthday today. She came to wish me happy birthday. I forgot my own birthday...When Heidi pulled back the towel to check on the severity of the wound, Peter watched in detached horror as a deluge of dark red blood poured down from his wrist and soaked into his T-shirt. His favorite pair ( ... )

Whatever healing power Peter had, it seemed to have flown the coop and right now he was in serious danger. Heidi frantically called 911, as she did her best to keep Peter awake. "Don't punk out on me now Petrelli, I'm not finished with you yet. After the paramedics were called it was time for her to make another phone call, a more harrowing one to make to her husband. He and Peter weren't exactly on speaking terms right now but he needed to be aware of what was happening. The call went straight to the answering machine and Heidi sighed. "Nate, are you there? Pick up. Listen I'm with Peter but he's in a bad way, I've called the paramedics...just, please? I'm scared ( ... )

"Here, Dad, it's your turn," Simon said, handing his father the game controller. They were in the middle of a rousing game of -- well, Nathan had no idea what it was called. The only thing he knew was that his character couldn't fly half as well as he himself did, and he almost wished he could show his two sons without scaring them half to death and having to answer a million questions to boot.

"Daddy, can we go outside to play catch later?" Monty asked plaintively. "I wanna play baseball when I'm old enough and Mommy says you could teach me."

"Of course, buddy. I bet you'll be really good at it, too," Nathan replied.

The phone started ringing, but Nathan let the answering machine get the call; Monty was sitting in his lap with a full glass of iced tea and there was no way Nathan was taking the chance of him spilling it all over the expensive deep-pile carpet.

Nate, are you there? Pick up. Listen I'm with Peter, but he's in a bad way, I've called the paramedics...just, please? I'm scared.Of course, Nathan bolted to his feet and ( ... )

Nathan was somewhat relieved, one of his fears assuaged. Like Nathan himself, Peter was sometimes a victim of his own self-destructive anger, and he'd just cut himself accidentally. But he should have healed instantly ( ... )

"Out the front." Heidi replied and clung to Nathan as he led her down the stairs, god even that seemed to be a chore, why did Peter have to live up so high? She felt a little better when she was in the car, she closed her eyes and took some deep breaths to try and calm herself. She heard Nathan call his mother, the sheer panic in his voice was heartbreaking, it brought more tears to Heidi's eyes. "I went to wish him a happy birthday." He probably thought they had forgotten, hell it looked like Peter himself had but Heidi remembered ( ... )
