Anniversary

This is mostly me doing a writing exercise to well see if I could, really. My grammar is probably not great and I spell things the Australian way so if you can get past that, you're welcome to read.

Heidi flicked through her book, really not in the mood to read it. In the past she remembered gladly celebrating this day but today it bought only sadness. Today had been the anniversary of her wedding to Nathan Petrelli and instead of the couple observing the day together, Heidi was alone.

She wasn't exactly sure when Nathan had died but the first instance when she believed something was wrong was a few months after they moved into the White House; Heidi remembered the kids were running around and Nathan had raised his voice to them. Heidi supposed it could have been put down to the stress of being elected president but she got the feeling there was something else to it.

Heidi decided from then on to keep a watchful eye on her husband; she needed to find out what was wrong with him. One night before a state dinner, Heidi peaked in on Nathan as he was getting ready. The only problem was it wasn't Nathan. A man had taken on the guise of her husband and had been masquerading as him for who knew how long?

Panicked, she ran into the bathroom, a million thoughts going through her mind: where was Nathan? Who was this man? Were she and the children in danger? She was on the verge of tears when she heard Nathan's voice through the door.

"Honey, hurry up. We're going to be late."

Heidi shivered how could he just stand there and pretend to be Nathan? She needed a plan, a good one. She took a few deep breaths. "I can do this." then put on her best smile and walked out to join him "Right here honey, shall we?"

The state dinner kept them busy on other sides of the room but Heidi made it her business not to let him out of sight. What was she going to do? She couldn't just go around and tell everyone that was not her husband, Heidi wasn't about to get locked up. For now she decided to just play along and hoped a solution would present itself.

Nothing did.

"You've been very quiet tonight, Heidi. Is everything alright?" Nathan asked on the way home that evening.

Heidi just nodded "Tired I guess, those dinners take a lot of you."

As they walked back into the White House, Nathan headed to his office while Heidi went upstairs to bed. She sat for a few moments then opened her organiser, pulling out an old phone number. She sat there for a moment, looking at it. Nathan would be livid if he knew she had it but that wasn't really him, was it? So it didn't matter. Heidi dialled the number, hoping that the right person would pick up.

"Hello?" A low gruff voice answered.

Heidi closed her eyes, a thankful smile forming on her lips.

"Peter, we need to talk."

That was four years ago. In that time Heidi had reunited with Nathan's brother Peter who had told her who the man pretending to be Nathan was and what he was capable of. Together they worked to bring about Sylar's downfall but it didn't prove as easy as first thought, he was a hard man to kill. Even now when he wears Nathan's face and it makes Heidi sick to her soul but she still wears her wedding ring as a reminder that her husband, the real Nathan wasn't the tyrant Sylar made him out to be.

Heidi looked down at her wedding ring, tears in her eyes. "Happy Anniversary, honey."
She sighed and went upstairs, checking on the children before heading to bed.
