in lieu of my weird angry outburst in the middle of nowhere of the morning, i love the transformation that goto maki has gone through coming from the idol image of hello! project and now towards the singer image, signed under avex's sublabel rhythm zone (also houses koda kumi, m-flo, anything somewhat related to hip-hop and r&b, etc.). her vocals have definitely improved, along with the music she has been given:
ever since joining avex, they've sent her to dance camp in L.A. and vocal camp too. sweet black is a project by mixi, and from what i gather, it's about girls. like, wanting girls to be themselves? not to be afraid to be themselves, or to express themselves. and i've generally gathered that from the three songs that she has written for sweet black: "fly away", "lady-rise", and most recently, "with..." "fly away," from what i see in the video, seems to be about breaking away from an image that is expected of you (such as the idol image she was associated with); "lady-rise" is about being confident about yourself (esp. in a fugly outfit that you'd only see sarah jessica parker wear in sex and the city); and "with..." seems to be about living in the present (so it seems from a google translation of the youtube video's description). her vocals are strong in these new songs and do not require sexuality to work well (coughcoughSOMEBOYS!TOUCHcoughcough). also each of these songs came out about a month or two after each other. i can't wait for her to release an album...hopefully under her name? i'd still buy the sweet black songs though.
also, under sweet black, she's been doing the radio show for sweet black girls, and she's done a few fashion shows. i think she may be one of the most successful hello! project "graduated-due-to-some-sort-of-scandal" graduates ever (the scandal was that her brother, goto yuuki, ex-singer too, stole about a million yen's worth [i think] of construction materials, with some cohorts and one of those cohorts was apparently romantically involved with gomaki)!
ゴマキ、がんばってください〜!
