Hand Fasting is an ancient marriage ritual. See www.handfasting.info for further information.

They were in the garden deep within the TARDIS. Flowers were strewn everywhere filling the air with an intoxicating scent. They were alone facing each other, just them; two lovers wanting to become one. She wore a white linen gown with a scarlet and gold sash around her rounded abdomen. He wore loose fitting white linen trousers and a white linen shirt. A multi-colored cord was draped over his shoulders. The sash around his waist mirrored hers in color and style.

The love in their eyes was unmistakable. They spoke to each other with their eyes, words being not only unnecessary, but inadequate in any language.

He took the cord off his shoulders and gently draped it over their joined right hands, the loose knot difficult to tie as all things worthwhile were difficult. The man then lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently. The kiss was gentle and tender but his eyes betrayed the simmering passion he held for the woman. He lowered their hands and lowered his lips until they kissed the woman’s belly. Within lay their child, growing, protected.

The elegant simplicity of the hand fasting was enough to bind this man and this woman for all of eternity; the silent ceremony confirming what time and space had decided for them long ago.
