GENERAL QUESTIONS

What's the concept ?

Sam and Dean after a hunt, at dawn, with the remains of a freshly killed revenant on the roof of the Impala. I set the action in a suburban neighborhood to show the contrast between the boys' job (dangerous and lonely) and the town, with all its beautiful little houses and its inhabitants unaware of the dangers surrounding them. Hence the title, Sleep well, America., the boys are here...

Where did you get the idea from ?

I was surfing the Internet the other day (as usual...
) and I stumbled upon a post on ohnotheydidnt  about some hipsters band. The music was boring as hell but the promo photo of the band was far more interesting :

Don't ask me why but I immediately pictured Sam and Dean in the car, maybe because the car on the image has the general shape of the Metallicar (only on this close-up, because in fact it doesn't look like the Impala at all). In addition, I was looking for ages for a reference photo of an Impala with the door open. I saw hundreds of them on the Net but it was never the right angle or the right kind of car or there was always something (or someone) in front of the car that hid the details of the seats, the wheels, etc...Anyway ! The "hispters pic" was just perfect as a starting point for some gore action and the idea of a dead thing on the roof immedialetly popped up into my sick mind.

What the hell is that thing on the roof of the car ?

You know me, I can't help adding a little gore element to my Supernatural fan arts. This time, I forgot about my usual reptilian monsters to go for something more traditional, a living dead, with her head cut off and still bloody on the roof of the Impala as if the boys had just cut it with a big machete. I wish I could have added more blood but as the car is black, it wasn't really visible. Too bad! I will add more next time.

It's been a long time since we saw a monster in one of your fan arts...

There are two reasons in fact :

- I focused in the past two months or so on illustrations arts for J2 RPS like Next Man Up for instance (see my Big Football Post for more details) and let's face the truth, monsters are quite rare in that kind of stories. Well, I've read a few of them and I've never seen a wendigo bitting Jared's ass while Jensen tells him "I love you". Or maybe I am looking at the wrong place, who knows !

- It's hard to admit but I am a little bit in the middle of a "schmoop period" (don't ask
) so there were less monsters, obviously. To tell you how "schmoopy" I am at the moment, here is a draft for what should have been a J2 prompt for the spn_reversebang  . I dropped the idea right after finishing to add the colors with Photoshop. I mean, come on ! It's the Reverse Bang, not the schmoop_bingo   for Heaven's sake !! What was I thinking ?! Well I was at Mc Donalds at 1:00am when I drew this with a pencil to trace kanjis so I guess that my brain wasn't functionning correctly.

There were some stains because of the ketchup on the top of the pic, I had to erase them with Photoshop

There was also this one for what should have been a College AU or something (note the "or something"....). Does this fandom need another College AU ? I wasn't sure so I dropped this one too! It was a quick ink sketch anyway, it's not as if I had spent 40 hours working on it, no regrets!

It was just a draft. It wasn't aim to stay like that. It should have become a CG painting with 6989890 layers and the whole shebang but...hum..no... It ended up in my "Reverse BB dropped prompts" file with a Base-ball AU and other stuffs completely delirious that would have driven the authors completely insane...

I've almost finished my prompts for the spn_reversebang  and, thanks God, it's less schmoopy (just a little bit less)

LET'S TALK ABOUT TECHNIQUE

What softwares and graphic tablet did you use ?

- CG : Photoshop CS - Painter Essential 3
- Graphic Tablet : Wacom Graphire 4

How long did it take ?

Quite long, around 30-35 hours I think. More than my Winchesters' Laundry Day.

What brushes did you use ?

For this one it was mostly predefined brushes downloaded on the Internet, very few default brushes except for some brushes from the "Basic Brushes" set. Here are the main brushes :

The tree is very detailed ! Did you draw all this by yourself ?

I wish. Which would turn me instantly into a freaking genius but no, it's a brush an it was veeeeeeery convenient !!

Did you paint over a part of the picture ?

I didn't exactly paint over the set. I traced thanks to the photo the general shapes of the houses because I coudln't picture myself reproducing all the little houses one by one with complex construction lines and the whole shebang. So I went for an easier solution, tracing, (yes I know it's bad
) and then finished the rest by myself. It was like coloring a sketch. I used speed painting techniques from this book then added the details with the chalk tool of Painter.

Any reference photos ?

Absolutely, I always use/need models when I draw :

- General inspiration
- Sam
- Dean
- Houses (a big thanks to raloria  who allowed me to use a picture from her incredible Spn Filming Location Master Post).

For those interested in LJ layouts, I changed mine, it's now full of Sam & Dean Chibies like the ones below. ^^

Voilà!
That's it for today! Have a nice week you all.
