Welcome to the Art Post PART II for SMALL SMALL WORLD by
dragonspell The amount of illustrations for this prompt being completely RIDICULOUS, I had to cut the Art Master Post in two, so be sure to check
PART I but also to read the amazing fic by

Ross, the bad guy 1) "NOTHING" JARED SAID...
The thing I loved about
dragonspell 's writing is the fact it's incredibly easy for a fan artist to imagine illustrations inspired by her story. The first draft she sent me was already full of details concerning the everyday life of Jared and the Del Montes and how they got used to each other like for instance Jared learning to bear their constant chatting and the green peas knowing how to avoid easily Jay's gigantic hands. As I didn't draw Jared a lot for this prompt, this scene, with Jared surrounded with a whole bunch of Del Montes flying all around him seemed to be the right occasion. This precise moment of the story is a little bit sad so for once, no bright colors, just a minimalistic black and white drawing enhanced with a texture underneath and screentones.
I did the inking in Manga Studio, added screentones and textures with Photoshop and...voila!
2) YOU'VE GOT PRETTY EYES
When Jensen imagined Small Small World, he thought of the Del Montes as cute little creatures and not really as a bunch of inquisitive big mouths always ready to give their opinion on everything and anything. No really, they just can't keep their mouths shut and don't hesitate to repeat what Jared thinks about his "creator" : he has beautiful eyes and a gorgeous mouth (old news...
)
Here again, this was just a pretext to experiment new stuff with Manga Studio and to draw even more Del Montes and a Jensen with bright red cheeks (because I am a Jensen!girl but I am sure you absolutely didn't notice
), not to mention I found this scene absolutely hilarious. Here again, here is a glimpse at the drawing before the coloring.
3) HEY BUDDY, WATCH THE MERCHANDISE!!!
It was a real shock for Jensen to learn that the Del Montes were real but the biggest shock of them all was to realize that absolutely EVERY Del Monte he drew at a moment or another in his life (for work or for fun) was actually existing in the "real world" like for instance the "3D glasses" one. Jen drew him one night, completely drunk after watching the 3D version of Avatar with his friends. When the Del Montes came to life, of course, the creature with the cool glasses was part of the adventure, much to Jensen's surprise.
When
dragonspell sent me the second draft of SSW, one of the scenes that made me laugh the most was precisely Jensen unable to believe what he had in front of his eyes and trying to touch the Del Monte's glasses. However, the pea made him understand quickly that you just DON'T mess with glasses this cool. Style is important even when you are a green pea, I guess...
I drew the outlines with Manga Studio before colorizing the drawing with Photoshop. Here's what the drawing looked like before Photoshop. The drawing took maybe 1H or 1H15mn top. It's definitely the easiest one of this prompt.
4) THE MACHINE
Jared and the Del Montes didn't appear in Jensen's apartment because of some spell or because the planets were well aligned. This miracle was made possible thanks an incredible machine designed by a little genius called Chad (Michael Murray, of course
).
It was entirely
dragonspell 's idea and after exchanging a few emails with my author, I knew roughly what Chad's invention was going to look like and started to design some sort of crazy steampunk engine with completely delirious details including for instance two little feet both wearing different sneaker brands (one Nike shoe and one Adidas shoe). To be really honest, I am sure that 80% of this machine is pretty useless (the coffee machine, the artificial intelligence with an IQ of only 45, etc..) but what makes a "crazy evil machine" crazy are all these details, not to mention the pipes, the steam and all the clocks and warning lights. The real heart of the invention is the nuclear toaster at the bottom but according to Chad himself, the thing still needs some adjustments.
Chad's parents even left on this "Machine 2.0" blueprint a little message of support for their son. It's not because you design evil machines that you cannot have your Mum and Dad's being really proud of you.
I drew this one with pencils and crayons and colorized it with Photoshop CS. I used a lot of sepia and warming filters to enhance the steampunk appeal of the engine.

Posting Schedule 1) TRAPPED IN MY OWN WORLD
When I started to work for this prompt, even if I had the A-ha's video for
Take on Me in mind, I didn't really know in what direction I was heading precisely. In fact, I couldn't make up my mind between two ideas : the one I developed in all the fan arts you saw so far (Jared is a comic character and he steps into the real world) and a second one where the situation was reversed (Jensen is trapped inside the fantasy world he created as a comic artist). I preferred the first solution but still I decided to give the second one a try and to draw Jensen "visiting" his comic and meeting the Del Montes for the first time. I drew the creatures and Jensen with an ink pencil and turned a photo of NYC into a screentone thanks to Photoshop. I just love the result but I absolutely don't regret my choice to go for colored pencil sketches with Photoshop and Painter concerning the other arts.

Jensen 2) JENSEN YOU S.O.B!!!
This is exactly the kind of silly stuff I like to draw when I have to stay late at work (and no possibility to run away whatsoever
) because let's face the truth, this one is completely silly (even if I must admit it really makes me laugh but I have the sense of humor of a 5 year old...).
This one shows how Jensen faces the situation and how he managed, at last, to make a difference between all the creatures who look the same in his eyes. A red marker, a little bit of custom was all it took. Of course, "Number One" isn't happy with the situation and threatens Jensen but the comic artist found a way to shut him up.
Technically speaking, I used an ink pencil, scanned the picture, added a sepia texture and colored the sketch with Photoshop CS and Painter. I also added a whole series of "warming filters" and played with the color balance to make the palette look warmer. I reworked the face so much it doesn't look like a sketch anymore, it's almost 100% digital now and is not really coherent with the rest of the picture but never mind, it was just to have fun, no need to be perfectionist for once!
3) THERE...THERE...BUDDY...
This fan art reaches a level of silliness equal to the one above which is normal because they were drawn the same day evening. We saw on the preceding drawing how Jensen deals with the Del Montes. I tried to imagine the everyday life of Jared surrounded by the annoying green peas. According to my drawings and the fic, these creatures are a real pain in the ass but little by little Jared learned to bear their presence and even to take care of them as you can see on the drawing. One of the Del Montes is obsessed by coffee and the poor thing nearly suffocated by drinking too fast. Guess who saved him ?
Same technic as the illustration above concerning the colors and filters (Photoshop CS + Painter)
4) POSTING SCHEDULE
In the series "In want to experiment new stuffs with Photoshop because it's fun" here is The Posting Schedule which was drawn especially to announce my RBB posting dates, hence the title. I had just finished a gore illustration the week before so I wanted something cute with pastel colors, cupcakes and the whole "kawaii shebang". For once, no Manga Studio, just Photoshop. I used a hard edges brush (1px) for the outlines and the gradient tool for the colors (+ soft edge brushes for the shadows and highlights). It's super manga-ish but I like it ^^
***And because I had time yesternight, I also drew this one which is the REALLY last one for Small Small World. It's just a scene I invented, you won't find it in the story
YEAH!!!!!!!! IT'S OVER!!! BYE BYE REVERSEBANG!!!
