Dust In The Wind

I close my eyes
Only for a moment
and the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes a curiosity

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water
In the endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground
Though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever
But the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money
Won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind

There is an interesting difference between the two versions of this song: the original, by Kansas, and the one sung by Sarah Brightman.

The original version is just horribly depressing. It's awfully sad. It's devoid of all hope. It's beautiful, but morbid - and a bit one sided.

Sarah Brightman, though… She adds a totally different layer of meaning to this song, creating sudden depth and contradiction. Her angelic voice is a stunning contrast to the merciless lyrics of the song. It says: yes, it is true, we are dust in the wind, but it doesn't matter. It speaks about transcendence - but not in the usual sense of the word. It just says: We are. We exist. Here, now. And this is what matters.
It's as if she said everything that Greta Christina wrote about - but without words - in just one powerful song about life and death, renewal and hope.

I only wish… I only wish it could ever convince me.
