BJJ Diaries: A Video With Me (In The Background)

Sep 01, 2009 22:31

I don't post my own rolling videos on our club's YouTube channel, because I'm ashamed of my technique... but in this video, you can see me fighting with Tomer in the background -- while in the foregound, my coach David Benyamin makes beautiful work of Shai.

It's incredible to watch David work... note the scissor choke at 0:50 -- this is one of David' favorite techniques, he does it all the time -- that is, every time when he can't finish the Kimura from north-south -- which doesn't happen too often, heh :-)
And how comfortable he is with a knee on belly -- against a guy much bigger than him! I don't understand how he does it, alas -- I get thrown off immediately in this position... And the straight armbar from the mount? It's incredible how David just takes it, without Shai giving anything to him! Beautiful, just beautiful...
You can see some of his other fights on our site, here: http://www.bjj.co.il/index3.php?page_id=10

Me, on the other hand... well, the good thing about this fight was that Tomer didn't submit me (unusual in our matches, he has half a year of training on me -- usually he catches me once or twice in our 6 minutes). My most stupid mistake here comes at about 2:18: Tomer attepts a triangle -- very badly, because both of my shoulders are outside -- and I, predictably, get out of it and pass the guard. And then... damn, this was just embarrassing! You can see me slap my forehead in frustration at 2:29, after Tomer flips me over and takes the mount.

A good thing about having the video is that I can see what caused the mistake -- during the fight itself, I only understood that I did something incredibly stupid, but I didn't know what it was. Now I can see that the error was threefold: after passing the guard in this position, firstly I should have grabbed his both legs very tightly (preferably clasping my arms together behind them); secondly, I should have pressed my head tightly to his body, so that he won't be able to do what he did at 2:25 (which was a very good move, by the way -- Tomer's gotten much better lately, the basics of his game are really starting to work); and thirdly, I probably should have sprawled and put all my weight on him (I have an excuse for not doing that, though -- injured toe, can't sprawl).

Well, hope I'll do it better the next time...
