In which Rukia is cranky because Matt's an asshat and Ichigo's a moron and Kyouya comes in and somehow they end up making out because I bloody well say they do.

Except it'll be more like a pseudo-make out because Brawl knows I can't write actual make out scenes unless I get ( Read more... )

Kyouya groaned and slammed down the cookbook, hoping against hope Rukia would not come home early. The whole apartment smelled like burned noodles despite all the air freshener he'd sprayed and the only part of dinner he'd made that didn't resemble an ashheap was dessert. And that was only by virtue of it being jello.

Maybe he could order takeout and she wouldn't know he'd tried to cook. He doubted it.

He sighed, annoyed, not just at the mess he'd made of dinner but at himself. It had taken Ichigo of all people to guilt him into finally starting to pay the rent. It was ridiculous-- why'd he let her go on so long paying it herself? Just because she was stubborn about it? It made him feel guilty, an emotion he liked to pretend he didn't have. He sighed again.

Rukia walked up to the apartment, grumbling under her breath. She had been in a bad mood all day and it was because of that red-haired, goggle-obsessed, stubborn bastard she considered her best friend. If he wanted to go off and get himself killed then fine. She didn't care. Of course not. Sure she had been in a towering temper all day and, sure, she had snapped at Ichigo all throughout school and slaying that one Hollow and, sure, she had been having trouble calling out Shirayuki because, as her sword told her, stress and anxiety was making her close herself off--but that wasn't due to him. She didn't care at all what that hypocritical bastard did with his life.

Still, it didn't change the fact that she nearly slammed the door shut behind her as she entered the apartment.

"What the hell is that smell?" she asked, nearly gagging as the full scent of Kyouya's experiments in cooking reached her nose.

"It's a work in progress," Kyouya said with a slight wince. "I think at some point it was supposed to be spaghetti and meatballs? Or maybe it's the bread you're smelling. Is it that bad, eh?"

Clearly he had not picked a particularly good time to start proving how bad his cooking was. Rukia looked completely ticked. Good thing he hadn't caused a fire, at least. Kyouya made one attempt at saving himself.

"The jello's still edible, though."

"That's supposed to be spaghetti and meatballs?" Rukia said, looking at the pile of grey gloop in a sort of abject horror.

Putting her backpack and zanpakutou down on the couch, she rolled her eyes.

"Are you sure that's not the meatloaf?"

"Um, yeah, can't you tell? There's the grayer lumps every so often." Kyouya grabbed a fork and grinned widely. "No. The meatloaf wouldn't be that color green. Do you want any?"

Rukia looked at the the pots of grey before answering, "No thanks. I'm not exactly hungry."

Then, she stomped into her room to change, emerging a few minutes later in light summer pyjamas with a continued scowl on her face.

Kyouya had just thrown the attempt at dinner into the trash can when Rukia returned.

"Hey again," he said. "What's gotten you so irritated, anyway? It's not like I blew anything up."

"Oh I would've been a hell of a lot more than irritated if you blew up my apartment," Rukia said, shooting him a glare. "And nothing. I'm fine. I'm not irritated. I'm perfectly the same as I always am."

"You don't curse unless you're irritated, so no, you're not the same," Kyouya said flatly. "Seriously. What's the matter?"

"Nothing, I said," Rukia scowled. "Can guys not listen correctly either?"

Kyouya was tempted to find out by reading her mind, but he opted against it.

"Well, I can't when you're obviously lying and I'm worried about you."

"I'm not lying, Kyouya," Rukia huffed, crossing her arms. "You don't have to worry about me. I'm a big girl, you know."

"I know I don't have to worry about you." Kyouya shrugged. "But I would anyway, is the thing."

"That's stupid," Rukia said. "We hardly know each other. There's no reason for you to worry."

"It's not stupid. In fact, it's on the border of normal, much as I'd hate to admit it," Kyouya said, somewhat dryly. "And as far as not knowing each other? We've lived in the same apartment for almost a month now."

"Ha! You are anything but normal," Rukia said, smirking slightly. "Yeah, well. Just because we live together doesn't mean we know each other."
