Scenes from past lives, 1

I recently invested in a new Canon scanner which has the necessary kit for scanning old 35mm slides. The results have generally been far better than I expected, even when enlarging to 5,000 pixels lengthwise. This meant I could dig out boxes and boxes of old photos from the 1990s, chuck out 95% of them and keep the good stuff. These are from a time when I wasn't nearly as serious about creating good photographs as I am today, so they're largely scenic shots.

The view from a helicopter about 20m above the edge of the Brazilian side of Iguaçu Falls. ( 27 MAY 1995 )

I think this boy was the younger brother of a schoolgirl I was sponsoring in Lukore, a village near Mombasa, Kenya. The colour tones in this photo are just right. ( FEBRUARY 1994 )

Well I looked at the granite markers
Those tribute to finality - to eternity
And then I looked at myself here
Chicken scratching for my immortality

The Pyramids at Giza, Egypt, as they were in 1986 (and probably 1886, and 1786...)

The A-Bomb Dome at midnight, Hiroshima, Japan. ( 13 AUGUST 1993 )

There is no proper point of entrance and exit, and it probably wasn't the done thing to do, but there was actually nothing to prevent anyone from walking around inside Hiroshima's A-Bomb Dome at midnight, which was an extraordinary experience. This is the view looking up inside the tower, which has to be held together by scaffolding. ( 13 AUGUST 1993 )

One of those awkward compositions that really needs more than a glint of sunlight to connect the foreground silhouette with the background, but I still like the spareness of it. The mountain is Lions Head on the Cape Peninsula, Cape Town, South Africa. ( 31 AUGUST 1995 )

Early morning rowing on the Swan River, Perth, WA, probably June 1994.

Probably over the Irish Sea, early morning, date unknown.

Kowloon, Hong Kong. ( 8 AUGUST 1990 )

The Southern Alps, South Island, New Zealand. ( 20 JUNE 1994 )
