Meme-tagged by godelescherbach: Box Office Mojo has released a list of the 48 best-grossing SF movies made from books, 1980-present (why it's not 50 I have no idea).

Italics for the ones I've seen, bold for ones where I've only read the book on which it was based, bold italics for ones where I've done both.

i never realised it was possible to make a really poor film especially with that kind of money behind you.
then i saw battlefield Earth... oh dear...

Altered States is a must see, sci-fi or not, and i am surprised you've missed The Stepford Wives, i saw the end of the re-make a few weeks back...

.. but then i do watch a lot of tv... ;)

I'm sure there are others.

I Am Legend is an obvious one missing, I think. One wonders if it is the case that they don't realise it (and Planet of the Apes) are adapted from books, as they are listed in the Sci-fi Remakes category, where they've clocked up more than enough money to get a mention in the books chart. Village of the Damned is another missing one.

Oh my. Comparing it to the Sci-fi Horror list, I'm astonished to note that Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is missing. And off the Sci-fi Comedy list, Men in Black and The Bi-Centennial Man are missing, along with Howard the Duck and Tank Girl.
