There's a belief that the American/British invasion of Iraq, known as 'Operation Iraqi Freedom', was originally called 'Operation Iraqi Liberation', but was changed' after someone pointed out how uncomfortably revealing the acronym is. Currently the only official source for this urban legend seems to be this White House page, which does mention "Operation Iraqi liberation" in the first paragraph, but notice the lower case 'l'. Google it and you get loads of cynical comment and some conspiracy theory, all of which links back to that one meagre source, but no more factual content.

I don't believe it would have gone so far as to have been officially named Operation Iraqi Liberation without someone vetoing it. As yet Snopes has nothing on this, so I've just suggested to them that they look into it. Anyone know anything more?

iraq, iraq war
