peters_dad came down to Texas for Thanksgiving. Just for him the weather decided to change. For weeks our high temperature has been between 70 and 80 degrees. The day he arrived so did our first real cold snap. Yesterday it was only 37 degrees in Fort Worth. Despite the weather we’ve had a good time together.
Thursday we cooked Thanksgiving dinner for my brother and his girlfriend. With the exception of the pumpkin pies everything turned out great-although I made a ridiculously large amount of mashed potatoes. Before
peters_dad arrived I made sure we had all the ingredients for pumpkin pies. Thursday morning as
peters_dad was getting everything together my brother remembered he didn’t have a rolling pin. Not a problem I had a pastry recipe that you pat in the pan or we could use a glass as a rolling pin substitute. Then we couldn’t find the pasty cutter. Again, not a problem, two knives can be used. Then my brother realized he didn’t have any pie pans. As it was still early in the day
peters_dad and I went shopping. None of the stores we visited had pie pans in any variety-tin, glass or even foil. At that point we decided to purchase a pre-made pie. We visited three stores before we found one at Albertsons.
Friday we did errands--
peters_dad got a haircut, I mailed a package to
rm_sister , and then we went to the mall to walk around. Surprisingly the stores were not very busy. As it was late afternoon by the time we got there so perhaps the crowds had gone home already. We did find a digital rice cooker similar to
this one at Dillard’s that is absolutely on my Christmas list. For the past three months my brother and I have been using the crock-pot almost exclusively during the week. The crock-pot has been great for cooking the main dish but I still have to wait to cook rice before we can eat. This rice cooker has a delay timer, similar to the bread maker, so it can be programmed to stop at a particular time and it is reasonably priced. I didn’t purchase it on Friday because I’m not sure I would have room for it in my car for the trip back home.
Yesterday we slept late-probably because we stayed up until after midnight watching movies. (Flyboys was very good. Tower of the Firstborn was a total waste of 3 hours and no, it didn’t get any better.)
peters_dad and I went out to breakfast and then went to the Dallas Temple. After that we went to the Fort Worth Stockyards for the Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Show. I had high hopes for the show, but then from the advertisements I expected more than six performers. By the time the show was over at 5:30
peters_dad wasn’t feeling well. Rather than stay for the rodeo at 8 we went to dinner at
Spring Creek so
peters_dad could have some barbeque ribs. After we got home
peters_dad took some benadryl and mucinex and went to bed.
Today
peters_dad looks, sounds and feels pretty bad. He definitely has a bad cold. I heated some chicken with rice soup for him and he is sitting in the recliner wrapped in a blanket reading Harry Potter. He is going to stay home from church and rest. Hopefully he will feel better tomorrow so he can fly home without any problems.
