Leah and I spend this past weekend at a friend's cabin on Lake Buckatabon. Her parents built it and her father loves to fish up there. I helped him get his ice fishing gear ready.
It was truly beautiful and serene up there, with a foot of snow blanketing the forest and damping sound. Deer were everywhere and they came right up to the cabin to eat corn we put out. Chickadees, woodpeckers and blue jays ate sunflower seed and suet from feeders just outside windows overlooking the lake.
I hiked through the woods wearing snowshoes and came upon nesting deer. They ran away, but not hurriedly.
Four of us played games and drank wine around a fireplace. We laughed until we ached.
Then we drove into Eagle River for a sleigh ride through the woods. It was during the night and the moon was almost full; night rides are really the way to go. Halfway through the ride we stopped at a bon-fire the staff built and drank hot cocoa under old conifers.
It was sad to leave, but Pria was waiting for us back in Milwaukee.
