I'm remembering sitting in my living room in San Francisco watching Florida get called for Gore, feeling elation, then seeing it get uncalled and feeling the beginning of the sickening, lurching ride of horror we have been on these past eight years.

Last night, I was in the mood to party more than I have been since that time.  FINALLY!!! WOOO!!!!

Then, relief.

Obama is a gifted orator, a skilled politician, and most importantly a smart, earnest person that cares about making the world and this country a better place.  That's a damn good thing.

He will be selecting the next Supreme Court Justice.  THANK.  GOD.

I am proud of this country that it could elect a person President who is not white.  While I don't consider this to be as momentous as if a descendant of an American slave was elected President, it is still very significant, and more importantly it has opened up a new dialogue on race in this country that hopefully will continue in a positive way.

While I liked Gore and Kerry, and  they could and should have made fine Presidents, Obama represents something different.  He is a person that has arrived just at a moment in history that will accept him, and I believe he can really be an FDR or Lincoln type of transformational leader and take this country toward a long and good period of sanity.  That is my hope.

I also know that he may disappoint many of his most enthusiastic followers, by being President, a position that requires moderation and compromise.  I think we should stick with him - disagree with him when we need to and continue to push for the things that will make this country better.

Today, I am feeling satisfied.  Yet, I still am tremendously disappointed at the thought of Norm Coleman of Minnesota beating out Al Franken in their Senate race.  And I really wanted to see that guy Saxy Chambliss from Georgia brought down.  And wow, it's hard to win a Congressional seat in Texas for a Democrat, isn't it?

But it's a good beginning.  And a good waking from the national nightmare we have been through.
