Venus Transit's a comin'

Jun 05, 2012 15:19

First, I shall steal a link from acmespaceship

Then I'll complain about clouds. My online weather forecast thinks there's a chance of rain at the start of the transit, but that it will be merely "partly cloudy" an hour before sunset, when the transit is well underway.

Right now, there are periods of sun peeking between clouds.

Wheee!!!!

Rooftop viewing at the CFA is canceled. I'm still going to go watch the feed from Hawaii, but I'm bummed.

I seem to be on the western edge of the wad of clouds that has you guys socked in. So that it will clear up after sunset. Not sure what sort of windows I'll get on the transit.

Intermittently cloudy here. I'll be outside at 6pm and we'll see how it goes.

It worked! And I figured out how to get some small pieces of wood and wedges to brace the binocs on the car to get a nice still image. It took me a while to get that worked out, so I didn't really see the black drop effect, but I got some good views of Venus. It's bigger than any of the sunspots visible right now. I watched for about 45 minutes then came back in because I have to get back to work.

Thank you for showing me how!

Excellent! I'm glad it worked for you. In spite of the clouds, we had a great time here--I think at least three other classes made "field trips" to see it with us between clouds.

Yay for sun! Hope you're getting good use from it; it was hardly used by the time it got to you. :-(

We had enough space between clouds to get a fun, if not great, view.

Todd Johnson set up his H-Alpha scope on the front steps of Fermilab. Skies were perfectly clear. Very nice transit.

I played Sousa on my Ipad.

I listened to some high-school band's version of that on youtube last night after my class went home.
