I was going to post this yesterday but I was feeling bad about all the people I owed replies and other misc stuff too. I've got a good start on that list so I don't feel so bad about posting this today.
I got this email from my father yesterday. It has been edited slightly to translate dad speak back into English but otherwise it's directly from the source. If I'm feeling ambitious I may add a few of the additional details I got over the phone at the end.
"Jess
Just a normal Sunday. I was enjoying a nap taking it easy and suddenly your mom decides to go to Mike's. (That's my brother who lives about 45 minutes away from my parents.)
On the way the car was empty so we filled it up. Then going down the road it is overheating. I pull off the freeway by where Mike was on the news with the escaped convict. (For further information on that incident check out my post here
http://peter-neverland.livejournal.com/81220.html on June 27th) They had no water so I bought 3 gallons. Pured 1 and a half in the car and half on the radiator.
Was limping it home when it died. It started and we went further then it died again and would not turn over. No cell phone and we were on the railroad tracks. (Both of my parents own cell phones but I'm not sure mom knows how to turn it on, and Dad never carries his on the weekend.) I pushed it off the tracks and down the street looking for shade. A man with two other riders stopped and loaned me his cell phone. (His name was Jose, a interesting fact that become important with the additional details I'll add at the bottom.) 5 tries later I get Crystal (My brother's wife) to answer her cell phone and I tell Mike where we are and then we wait 45 min. for Mike to show up.
Since we are only 6 blocks from his work we tow it over there. When we get there the gate is open (one of Mikes customer stores his trucks there) (<-- Dad's comment) So we pull in and unhook the car get in the truck and go to leave and the Driver had left and locked the gate.
So Mike left his keys at home so we had to call one of his employees to drive down and let us out. Waited another 30 minutes then came home.
Just another pleasant Sunday afternoon."
You're laughing but this is the life I grew up with. The additional details I promised to add involves Jose and his phone. Not only did Dad try calling Mike 3 times and then Crystal an additional two, but he also called 'the Marines' (Our affection name for my baby brother who is in the Marines) several times and got no answer. When he discussed this with said offspring (both Mike and the Marines) they both claimed to have heard the phone, checked caller ID, decided they didn't know a Jose, let it go to voicemail and then never checked their messages.
Dad's finally comment to me was that he thinks he is going to start carrying his cell phones on the weekends. Personally I think this is a good plan.
