Forsberg Wills A Win 11/09/2005 @ 11:41 AM
I was lucky enough to attend last night`s game in Philly and what a game it was. Having only seen Forsberg from afar before this year I was amazed by what I saw last night. There are many levels to this player`s game.
Since the beginning of the season we have seen his timing return and he continues to get better and better with every shift. It has amazed people at every level of the Flyers organization. One senior person admitting to me, "I had no idea how good a stick handler he was."
Well last night he showed that he could will a game to win. With about ten minutes left last night Forsberg stood up on the bench and screamed something down the line. I don`t know what he said, but it may have been, "watch my next shift!" Forsberg hit the ice at a level we had not yet seen in Philly. He hit three players in the offensive zone, sending two to the ice. The Flyers bench was standing watching him basically decide it was time to win a hockey game. Forsberg skated back to the bench and Mike Richards jumped over the boards at full play-off intensity. It was contagious.
The next Forsberg shift saw a Bruin try and make amends for the hit he had taken. Forsberg saw him coming and flattened the Bruin instead. The puck went up ice, and the Bruins scored a goal after Joni Pitkanen gave up the puck. Forsberg stood at the bench and went at the referee at center ice who had just let a blatant penalty go.
Then Pitkanen came by the bench. Forsberg stopped him and said something to Joni that turned Joni into an offensive machine. The rest is history with Joni;1 on 4 getting the puck to Gagne, and Forsberg making an unreal pass with 23 seconds left to Joni to tie, and Joni winning it in overtime.
The crowd poured into the concourse and chanted like a play-off series had been won.
All on a tuesday in November.
Thanks Peter.
