By choice I spend a lot of time on suburban trains going to my work commitments, I could take a pool car but there's no fun in that. Travelling by train gives me time to observe and ponder or OP as we professional ponderers say.
A ponderosity came to me the other day whilst on the Fremantle line; the idea of a story, I have made up the first bit and the last bit I want you creative and clever people to fill in the middle bit.
I don't want rushed off responses so don't post them here, take your time, give it some thought and email them to me. Put as much or as little into it as you want, a paragraph, a page, several pages, whatever you like. I'll be posting your responses on February 1 so you have plenty of time to submit and edit if you need to before they appear in LJ. Email your contributions to me at > pb1610@hotmail.com
"It is 1945..Harry Taylor is heading home to Perth to be demobbed after three years as a prisoner of war in Japan. He has sailed from Japan to Melbourne then to Fremantle. In uniform and carrying his kitbag he boards the steam train in Fremantle.
The doors close behind him and the train slowly moves off. Harry looks around the carriage and is confused and thinks he may have delayed shell shock; the train is on the same old line and heading to Perth but it is 2009 ~~
The carriage is light, bright and colourful, the seats are space age, very few of the people are white Australians and everyone (apart from a man and wife in their eighties sitting in the priority seats) is wearing clothing that has names written all over it, Quicksilver, Adidas, Reebok, Nike, Billabong. People are using mobile phones and listening to ipods and doing all the things that people do. Outside the train he recognises some buildings and houses from 1942 but not many.
-THE MIDDLE BIT-
He arrives thirty five minutes later at the Perth train station and as he steps off the train, handcuffed and in the custody of two railway police officers, it is 1945 again."
So what happened in the middle bit ?
I'll be working on my own middle bit in the meantime too... ..the story middle bit that is.
