I'm in the lobby of a hotel, glass washed out with light on all sides. I get on the elevator and head on up to my room. I'm in the room for a bit and a few people walk in. I realize I know them, but I don't know them. Man, woman and child. I start talking about bullet proof vests with the child, but for some reason have a wrist brace in my hand that I'm fooling with, trying to adjust.
I go downstairs and leave the hotel with some other people I don't recognize, but know. We are in Hammond. We drive by the house on Towle I grew up in. There has been a fire and the doors/windows are boarded up. We don't stop, we don't talk about it. We just continue on our way.
We end up at a club of some sort. Did I mention I was in a suit? I run into an older gentleman I don't recognize, but know. His name is Dexter. He and I speak for a while, I can't remember the conversation.
A band has been playing this entire time, but a girl joins them to sing her first number. As she starts singing, the space shrinks and from far away, she is right in front of me as I sit in a chair.
Her hair is red, the kind of red that goes from blonde to red to brown, mattering on how the light catches it. Her dress is black and sleeveless. She has several tattoo's, but the only one that I remember is the words on her forearm, "Carpe Diem."
She carries herself with confidence, her posture correct as her eyes slowly scan the room, catching people's gazes and holding them until they turn away.
She starts singing. It's a blues song. Her voice is perfect, her soul is laid bare for all to feel. Ever too quickly, the song ends. She could have sung until the planet grows cold and it would have been too soon.
For the first time, she looks into my eyes.
A white cloth falls over the two of us, closing everything around us off.
"Do... do I know you?" she asks, offering her hand.
"No, but I think that maybe you should."
