My uncle Irv comments

Mar 22, 2006 00:20

There was a time set aside in Uncle Irv's wonderful memorial service for comments from anyone who wanted to share. (Uncle Gary, also a schoolteacher, told us afterwards that Irv had insisted "Make sure they're quick. Two minutes max, or you take a zero." Some of us would have taken a zero on the assignment.) During the time leading up to the ( Read more... )

Hello...you don't know me, but I went to Downers Grove North in the mid-90s, and I remember your uncle very well. I never had a class with him, but always wished I had (and I know I wasn't alone in that). He was a refreshingly distinctive presence in the halls and when he'd stop by other classes.

I was sorry to hear of his passing. I found your journal while looking his name up, and just wanted to let you know that he touched even those of us on the far periphery of his life.

My sympathy to you and your family.

My name is Jasmine and I went to north salinas high school where Mr. Lester was my senior(04`) english teacher. He was the best teacher that I have ever had. He respected everyone and everyone respected him. He connected well with all of his students. It was like he came down to our level so he could understand us, and we could understand him and thats what I admired. He wasn't like all of the other teachers. He made learning fun, and made being in his class worth while. My deepest sympathy to his family that he has left behind. He touched everyones lives he came in contact with. He will never be forgotten, and always will be missed.

My name is Daniela and I too went to North Salinas High School and had Senior English with Mr. Lester (c/o 2004). I just wanted to say that, even though at times we never learned anything about English, he always talked about life and the meaning of it. It was amazing that he treated his students with such great respect and dignity. He treated all his students like adults, at least the ones that acted like it. Everytime I went into his class it was almost as if it was also like a therapy consiltation. I always remember not to sentence drop when I am trying to get my point across, always. R.I.P. Mr. Lester.

I was fortunate enough to have this man be my teacher for two full years in the 80's at DGN. He was an outstanding teacher and mentor. I think of him often. I still have my star list in my desk at home and consult it from time to time. When I train groups of people in business I use his introduction method every time.

He was about truth and honesty. More than any instructor I ever had at any level he treated everyone equally and treated them with respect. In high school, he treated his students as adults.

I will never forget him.
