SUPER picky, looking for a boxer mix in fall or winter

I apologize in advance for my pickiness, but we're in an apartment situation and have to be practical. We both have big hearts and can't wait for a pet to shower with affection, but I have to be tough and make sure we make our commitment to just the right pet. Otherwise we'll end up with more than we can take care of.

All year, we've discussed getting a dog, and we finally have a big enough place (tiled kitchen until it's trained; big apartment for after). I want a mutt, but he wants a boxer, so we're going to have to compromise and get a mix (mixed with something SMALLER). But I've read up on boxers, and there are a lot of health problems associated with them, especially pure-breds. So I would love to have one with juuuust enough boxer for my boyfriend's life-long dream, but enough of "some other breed" to give it hybrid vigor.

The perfect pet would also have to be either crate trained, or young enough to learn appropriate indoor behavior. Knowing that his or her parents were/are healthy would also be wonderful, in addition to knowing as much as possible about his personality.

If there's any question about our suitability, we have plenty of friends to us as references. Thanks in advance.
