Notes: Canon compliant, OMG!! As such, there are spoilers for Deathly Hallows.
Helga pauses at Rowena’s door, a cool cloth and a basket of bread in her hands. She is preparing to venture inside when she hears movement and a voice that is not Rowena’s. Curious, she lingers in the corridor, hoping to catch snatches of conversation without truly attempting to do so.
“I feel that I am dying, Godric…”
“Don’t be foolish, Rowena, you’re nigh immortal. And even if you weren’t, I’d still maintain that you’ll be the last of us to meet death. You’ve always been so careful.”
“I am reckless in other ways.”
“Well, I’ve certainly yet to see them.”
“Godric. Now is not the time to jest. Helena is gone, and I fear that I shall never again see her.”
“So, it’s your daughter who kills you, then.”
“Do not dare-it is my worry-”
“Worry for your daughter. I can’t bear seeing you in this state, Rowena. Allow me to find her for you. I will return her to Hogwarts!”
“No. I have sent Jonathon-”
“The Baron!”
“Do not tell me that you disapprove. I know that he will not rest until he finds her.”
“The Baron has a temper! Any relation of Salazar’s would!”
“He will not harm her, Godric.”
“Why didn’t you send me instead? Surely, I’m more capable-”
“You are needed here. I… I need you. You have always brought comfort to me.”
“Ha! As if I am so daft as to believe that!”
“Godric…”
“Rowena, if anything, I merely serve to shatter your nerves. You told me such yourself in our youth.”
“We are no longer young. I enjoy your company and terrible humor now.”
“But only when your husband’s away.”
“… That is not fair of you to say.”
“Why is it that when I longed for your company most, you wouldn’t have me?”
“Godric-”
“Haven’t you realized, Rowena, how much it pains me that I can’t have you? How much I grieve that Helena isn’t mine?”
“Godric-”
“And now you won’t allow me to grant you this one favor; you refuse to-”
“Godric! I do not wish to lose you as well! Consider my pain, knowing that I might die ere either of you return. My own husband-”
“He isn’t here, is he? I could-I could slay him for leaving you behind!”
“He is not a dragon-”
“Isn’t he? Then why did he abandon you?”
“Because he thought me capable of thriving on my own, just as I have always done.”
“Yet it seems that you can’t. I’ve had enough of this, Rowena! I don’t care who you’ve sent, I will follow in his tread till I overtake him!”
“Godric… please… do not leave me. Jonathon will find Helena. I do not doubt that. You must not doubt it, either, or I will only worry more.”
“… He’ll have my trust then, though only for your sake. And only if you don’t beg it of me any longer. You’ve never been one to beg for anything, Rowena. I don’t care if you do believe that you’re dying.”
“Fine. I will… I will never beg nor plead nor implore, for you will trust Jonathon and you will not do anything rash, even if it is difficult for you. Does that please you?”
“Yes. Welcome back, Rowena Ravenclaw.”
Helga smiles, but it is bittersweet. She knows there is only so much that Godric can do when the damage has already been wrought.
