A Favor
“Godric,” Rowena calls.
Godric quickly downs a final swallow of ale, and warily turns to her. “What have I done now, Rowena?”
“You have not done anything. I have simply come to entreat you for a favor.” She smoothes her skirts, suddenly fidgety. “Godric, I want you to marry me.”
“What? Why?”
“Logically, it is between you and Salazar, but Salazar has declined, for he believes we are too similar. You, however, are my opposite; you excel at what I do not-though I admit this out of necessity alone. You are… kind… to me, and your stubbornness is a fair match for mine. Your mind-”
“Rowena,” he interrupts. “That’s not what I asked.”
“Why?” she echoes. “Because there is gossip, and I will not stand for such a trifling thing to be the downfall of what I have toiled to build. You are not required to love me-”
“Yet if I do love proud Rowena, frightened of falling, whose stubbornness is actually no match for mine? What then?” He winks.
Rowena flushes. “Then I suppose… I must simply… learn to… a-accept…”
“Then I, too, shall accept.”
He kisses her hand, and her flush deepens with pleasure.
