Earthen
In the apple orchard I find him-that place where I can expect him to be when our house is full of empty rooms. He sleeps with a sturdy trunk against his back, scattered notebooks (some empty, some filled, some mine, some his) about his feet. A three-headed caterpillar treks serenely across his arm.
“Neville,” I say softly. I kiss his hair like the sunlight of a summer morning.
How wonderful it is to rest and not be plagued by nightmares.
When he does not do much more than stir, I smile, and settle onto the soft earth beside him.
