Author’s Notes: For
southerncharmfa at
twilight_santa, as a little supplement to her big gift, which I'm posting next. I couldn't resist. Like Edward.
He kisses her in moments of weakness.
He kisses her once because she’s beautiful, because everyone wants to have her and hold her and he? He’s still human enough that he can’t resist the pull; her eyes beckon and so he follows.
Once. Just once. And then he tears his lips away and pretends not to notice her disappointment.
He kisses her once because she kisses him first, and it startles him. But she only kisses him first because she’s worried, and she’s frightened: Emmett McCarty might not make it through the night, and then where will she be? She’ll have lost what she’s wanted so many times in a row that it hurts to count them off upon her fingertips.
Their lips touch for only a fraction of something that’s too short to be a moment, and he flies backward, out of her reach.
Edward isn’t like that, after all.
He kisses her once because Bella leaves him for Jacob Black, and Jacob leaves Bella in favor of life.
He kisses her twice because Bella seeks comfort from Jasper, and finds it.
“I told you this would happen, Edward,” Rosalie murmurs, cold breath against his ear.
He kisses her again and again and again because he doesn’t care, and because she does.
Can what’s broken still break? Maybe someday they’ll fix it for good.
