Treasure Shop

Dec 21, 2008 20:54

It was five days until Christmas.  Draco was frantically shopping; getting some last minute gifts for his family and friends.  Diagon Alley was filled to overflowing and people were milling about also frantic with need for presents.  Not only were the streets and shopped crowded, but it was bloody cold and if Draco was not mistaken, it was about to start snowing.

Draco stopped and looked up and sure enough a few snowflakes were slowly drifting down towards him.  He shuffled some gifts around in his arms until his left hand was free then slipped said hand into his pocket and extracted his list.  He had crossed off Pansy, Blaise, Greg and his father.  There was only Mother left.  He had no clue what to get her.  His first thoughts had been clothing, but he would have had to ask his mother for her measurements and that would have been uncomfortable to say the least.  Or he would have had to barrow one of her robes, but she would have noticed that it was gone almost right away.  She was every so observant.

Draco stood there in the middle of the crowd, people rushing past him and scowling at him for remaining motionless, and he thought.  What would be a good gift for his mother?  Narcissa Malfoy’s face came clearly into his mind.  He studied it carefully.  She wore hardly any jewelry.  She had the Malfoy Family Jewels and some choice pieces of the Black Family Jewels.  However, there was not one piece that she liked above all, there was not one piece that she wore always; other than her wedding band that is.

So that was the key.  Draco wanted to buy his mother a piece of jewelry that she would treasure and always keep close to her heart.  He looked around, needed to find a shop where he could find such a trinket, a necklace or pin perhaps.  His sight settled on a shop that was in front of Flourish & Blott’s.  No one was going in or out.  The light inside was dim and Draco could not make out any of its merchandise, but the name was what truly caught his attention.   There was a small silver awning to shield from the rain, from the sun, and today it would shield from the falling snow.  There was no sign above the awning, but on the window it was clearly printed in arched silver writing lined with black:

Lord Chimera’s Treasures.

Just below said name was a black chimera with green eyes.

If the name caught Draco’s interest, it was the Slytherin green eyes that made him decide to go inside.  He slipped his list back into his pocket, shrunk his various parcels and added those to his pockets as well.  And he moved towards the shop and froze just before his hand reached the door.  He noticed smaller silver writing under the chimera:

We hold all that you treasure.

‘Interesting.’  With that phrase in mind he opened the door and stepped inside.  The shop was lavishly decorated in silver with hints of green and black.  A beautiful Christmas tree stood in the corner decorated in silver with an angel at the very top.  It all so very stylish, except that Draco saw no merchandise.  Yes, there were shelves, but he did not see any items on the shelves.  Draco was baffled.  He traveled up and down each aisle, but there was nothing.  He turned towards the front counter and there was no one there either.  He stepped up to it and noticed a bell.  He reached out, but hesitated, obviously a crackbrain owned the shop.  Did he really want to call him or her?

An image of his mother flashed before his eyes.  He had to at least give it a try.  Before he could change his mind or even question his actions he used the palm of his hand to ring the bell.  There was some shuffling behind a curtain and then it was pulled aside.

And Harry Potter stepped out to greet him.

“What…”

“Welcome to my shop, Draco.  I have been expecting you.”

“How could you be expecting me?  I decided to come into this shop on a whim.”

“Did you, now?”  Potter stepped up to the counter.  “No matter.  I have just what you are looking for.”  He reached behind the counter and took out a small black velvet covered box.  “Go ahead, open it.”

Draco looked at Potter suspiciously but curiosity got the better of him.  He picked up the box and opened it.  Inside was a necklace.  It was delicate little silver thing.   The pendant that dangled from it was locket and engraved in its cover was a garden.  If he looked closely he could see the various plants swaying slightly, as if they were dancing in the winds.  He opened the locket and inside was two pictures.  One was of him as child.  He looked serious for all of two seconds then he broke out in the most infectious smile.  He remembered when his picture was taken.  It was right after his 8th birthday.  And his mother had caused that smile.  The second one was of his father.  He was smiling and he looked so young.  This must have been taken right before or just after his wedding with Mother.

Draco could not believe his eyes.  He closed the locket and brought it close to his chest.  He briefly closed his eyes then met those of Harry Potter.  They were such green eyes.  And suddenly he understood all the green that surrounded him; it all matched Potter’s eyes.  “How?”

“Do not worry about the how?  Is it what you were looking for or isn’t it?”

“It is.  Nothing could have been more perfect than this.”

Potter smiled.  He smiled such a dazzling smile that Draco was momentarily sidetracked.  What he would not give…  No.  He was here for his mother.

Draco looked down at his fisted hand and opened it to reveal the locket yet again.  “How much?”

“Well, it is the finest Goblin crafted silver you will ever find…”

“Please.  How much?”

“How much do you think it is worth?”

“I could not put a price on such a treasure.”

“Just give me what you think is fit.”

Draco reached into his pocket, took out his Galleon purse and dumped all that it held onto the counter.  “I think that this would begin to cover it.”

“This will be enough.”  Potter waved his wand and the money disappeared.

“Thank you, Potter.  I do not know what else to say.”

‘There is no need to say or do anything else.  Just go and make your mother happy.”

Draco turned to leave, but Potter called him back.

“Draco, wait.”

Draco walked back to the counter.  Potter handed him a card.  “What is this?”

“It’s the address of my flat.”  He gave Draco another dazzling and slightly mischievous smile.  “I want to make all of your Christmas wishes come true.”  And with a wink he was gone, back behind the curtain.
