In support of daily_deviant

There appears to be a wank starting at daily_deviant over the use of a loaded word: Miscegenation.

Each month, the mods randomly pick a few words out of a sex encyclopedia to use as art/fic fest prompts. This month that included miscegenation, which offended one reader so deeply that she felt compelled to demand a prompt change (which are never granted, because the community tends to offend various types of people with its deviant content, so the rule is don't-kink-don't-read.)

The problem is: When is it ok to use a word that in some cultures, negatively implies a dilution of genetic purity? The offended group says that "miscegenation" is used by racists and equates it to racial slurs such as nigger. There are less-offensive prompt alternatives that encourage content of mixing of races and species, and ignorance of that sociological pain doesn't negate the need to be sensitive to it. When a word implies that a darker skin color pollutes the Caucasian ideal, and when you include non-humans in the definition, you imply that darker skin is non-human. The word is offensive because it negatively lumps interracial with bestial relationships, therefor a better word should be used in its place.

The mods responded it is a scientific term and they won't change a long-standing rule because contemporary American racists have abused its usage. In a global sense the word is neutral and clinical, there are other prompts to choose from, and in the wizard world, the word is appropriate because exogamous relationships in canon are between races, species, and sentient magical creatures alike. In fact, one of the best values we take from the book is that judging someone on their "half-breed" or "mudblood heritage" is wrong.

George Carlin said it best: "There are no bad words. Bad thoughts, bad intentions, and words." I could just copy and paste the first four sets on his Explicit Lyrics tour to about sum up my thoughts on this one. I don't like people controlling language, controlling thoughts. Everything is fair game to discuss. So the answer is: Talk about it. When someone uses an offensive word, you should post an entry about how it reminded you how much you hate racists, educate your flist about its sordid history and usage, and hope like hell we get to see Fenrir raping babies.

Because that's what the daily_deviant is about, right? Exploring taboos, finding humor or gratification in dark fic and art ... it's all fair play. Some people have been raped. Some people have fucked a black guy.

Hang on, I don't think I'm allowed to sneak in jokes like that. Because saying rape and fucking black guys in the same vein is racist and how dare I construct that on purpose? How about instead: Some people have fucked Arabian centaurs.

Some people like to lay plastic wrap over their partner's mouth and poop in it so they get the warm mushy texture without all that flossing for popcorn kernel skins later. They didn't digest the first time around - when are people ever going to learn? The point is, raise your glass to the deviant mods (especially if there's pee in there, you filthy bitches.) Celebrate the wizard porn that depicts exogamy in a positive way. Please do point out that racists use that word too, in a context that racism is bad and should be stopped - not the usage of the word. The intention was pure. The word is clinical. The act is hot.

pervart is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a second minor in Interpersonal Communications. Her post-graduate research grant proposal focused on exogamous relationships because she was dating a Jew so she feels compelled to pretend she has an academic background on this issue. Do the benchmarks of satisfaction for ethnic and religious heterogamous couples match their endogamous peers? We'll never know, because she got dumped instead accepted an invitation to join the field study on Muslim conversion experiences in Michigan penitentiaries. Fascinating, yes ... useful in porn debates, no. But if you're interested, 90% of inmates who reported converting to Islam while incarcerated failed to continue their devotion after being released. This was generally due to lack of family and friend support, lower peer saturation, the increase in distractive stimulation, and false conversions for the benefit of personal safety, additional privileges, racial solidarity, or positive parole influence. As of 2001 there were no direct studies that compared sustainable satisfaction for heterogamous versus endogamous couples, but the corollary data suggested it to be lower. Sorry, Utopians.
