"Mmmmm....artichokes!!"
Artichokes look a bit like thistles, and if you fail to harvest the globes they grow into these lovely flowers.
Even though it's only February, I've started to plan the vegetable garden for this summer. My bed will be 14' long from east to west, and a little over 9' wide. I'm going to have three 30" rows with two 10" paths. This year's crops may include sugar snap peas, lettuce, a few herbs, carrots, radishes, french melons, bell peppers (I may also grow mini bell peppers in a container), tomatoes, and artichokes. Yes, artichokes. I'm aware that they're a perennial that isn't ready to harvest until the second year and zone 4 is too cold for them to grow back, but I'm going to trick them into being an annual by starting seedlings 12 weeks ahead of transplant, and then moving them to our unheated basement for the remaining 6 weeks before transplanting. Wish me luck! I also need to fill a partly shady 84" long row. I also need to find a climbing something to fill the partly shady 56" long row after my sugar snaps have all been harvested.
Anyway, I'm excited- so sorry to bore you all!
