Hi there!

I did enjoy Northampton a great deal - hopefully next time I go, I'll be able to spend a little more time there. We really just poked around what appeared to be the main downtown area, so my understanding of the economics of the place is, um, sketchy at best. Asheville is definitely not in great economic shape, though; it does have a number of wealthy citizens, mostly retired, but the poverty and unemployment (and actually, more importantly, the underemployment) levels are bracing. I probably have a somewhat skewed view of Asheville, though, since I was working in a disability / workers' comp office there, and interacted with some of the poorest inhabitants of the region. I really had no idea how many people are functionally illiterate until I started working there. But, um, (sorry, tangent!) yes. Northampton was beautiful. I didn't realize that's where you and Chesh went to college - how nifty!

Speaking of procrastination... I'm totally not working on my statement of purpose, which is open in the other window. Oops. When I was visiting J., it was remarkably like college at that point - both of us sitting together on the couch, laptops on laps, ostensibly writing but actually doing random internetty things and joking with each other. These sessions do not produce much work, but are fun, and certainly preferable to the type of procrastination where you're wandering around your house all "I don't KNOW what I'm trying to say!" and going in rhetorical circles. Not that I have any familiarity with that. I'm sorry to hear you've been bitten by the procrastination bug, though. It's too bad you couldn't be there procrastinating with us. Much more fun in groups.

No, of course it doesn't matter as such what kind of dates they are... but I thought there might be inquiring minds. *grin*

NYCares is this big organization that basically gathers together volunteering opportunities of all sorts all over the city. You can sign up for individual projects through them, but you have to go through their orientation first. But there's all sorts of neat projects, so I'm looking forward to it.

Ugh, and the broom closet - it really is totally fine. It was mostly just a little tiring, partly because I came out of the broom closet eight years ago, three separate times to each member of my immediate family. So I kind of thought that he would have asked all these questions by now. But it was really okay. :) Always appreciate the hugs though. *hugs back*

And for all that I'm totally indulgently whining about this grad school application (for which I apologize; it's kind of ridiculous, and normally I wouldn't do quite this much complaining "out loud", but ... the internet is right there! it's so tempting...), life definitely is treating me quite well lately. The next few days are actually pretty free - we should chat! What's your schedule like?

(okay, really, I can't put off the writing any more! *grin*)
