FRANKNESS

"Oct. 7, 1975

Sat out all p.m. under a young maple which dropped its red, yellow and green leaves all around us. I talked to visitors, got overtired. Reading aloud or talking are a labor, so considered in monasteries. I mentioned my fatigue to Walter (Kerell), a frank and honest soul and said I had talked too much. 'Yes, you do' he said frankly. How good community life is!"---from the Diaries of Dorothy Day. Marquette Univ. Press, 2008. Below is a photo of Walter Kerell taken some years later by Robert Steed.
