Title: Some Assembly Required Author: persnickett Rating: R Prompt: "…you find yourself in the middle of something you don’t understand." (Munro Kelly, Congo)
Notes Written for the Notable Quotables Challenge at sexy_right
Loved it - as with all your LFDH fic. Communication is key - and these boys are really so bad at it. Favorite part was definitely Matt paraphrasing John's rant about the coffee table. :)
Ya, little bit of cute hacker action, never a bad gift, eh? Hmm...they do seem to be bad at it - at least I seem to make them bad at it in many, many of my fics.
Hee hee hee, that rant would have been a doozy, maybe it's a good thing we missed it. ;) Thank you so much, I'm so glad to hear you like all my stories, very nice of you to say.
Hey thanks! I had ideas from so many prompts, it took me a while to settle on the ones I did. Thanks for submitting this great one. :)
And yes, they did seem rather calm about everything this time around, didn't they? It was 3am when I wrote this, so maybe that has something to do with it. Heh.
I love this SO much. Possibly as much as waterfight fic, but in a completely different way.
First, your characterization is SPOT-ON. I mean, everything here is perfect, from their cadences to the way they move to all the little details, like Matt never being without "those tiny headphones". And then there's the tactile, very visceral aspect of your writing, with fingers pushing bluntly and rumpled, urgent trails of clothing.
But mostly I love that they are on this... parallel path? With only one possible end-point to this journey. Both of them know it on some level -- they're already talking in terms of "we" and hell, Matt bought *furniture* -- but somehow they're both kinda surprised and startled to realize that they're already AT the destination.
This is just brilliant. And I don't think I love this in a "different way" at all. Great writing just needs to be loved.
Honestly I wondered what your reaction to this one would be. My approach to this one was - as far as I can tell - the most similar to your usual process I've ever gotten. This one was a free-range animal. It was totally off the leash, and just barely contained within the parameters of a story that made sense. This was the first time I stopped worrying about each line and each word and whether I repeated anything I hadn't meant to - because I HAD to. Time was limited and so was my ability to write; I was so, so tired, I don't know how I got it posted without major errors like forgetting the whole title or something. As a result, it's lacking not only some of the extra words and flowery language and interminable delving into and dwelling on what the character is thinking of my usual fare, but also the little hints I usually put in as to the background of how they got here - no mention of how long Matt's been living there, or how long it's been since that 'first time this happened'. That worried me, but I let it go (again, I HAD to, or
