our fate

i'm home and FINALLY have time to read the NY times cover to cover, and every time I do that my world view is always shaken up. I can't make up my mind - is the world, and the majority of people in it, a good place, or not? Good: China is pursuing action/investigation against a military leader who opened fire on protesting villages (this is new for China), Bush has finally puclicly acknowledged the staggering total of Iraqi deaths, and mainly the proceedings of the Hong Kong WTO discussions - how we're moving toward more open exports from the world's poorest countries, which, yes, will hurt South Carolina cotton farmers but I think is a necessary step for evening out the unbelievable economic inequalities in the world...
Bad: sallie mae and college loans - 1/2 of those who start college don't finish due to costs, and those that do graduate have an average of $18000 debt but sallie mae (a private company which finances loans) had the second highest ror (rate of return) of fortune 500 companies, medicaid reform difficulties, australia riots

I just don't know.

something I learned today: a lot of success is knowing what you want and simply doing it. also, before you start a big project that costs money, even with great intentions, ask someone who knows how to do it and get things straight
