Skeletons, by Catherine Tregenna, is the last episode to feature Ben Daniels as Senior Crown Prosecutor James Steel. Expect much weeping and wailing and gnashing of the teeth!
- This opening music is very dramatic.
- Ouch! Finding a dead child is never a good start to a story.
- Ooh! Matt's found a note: They must be destroyed - and Ronnie says 'I didn't think I'd ever see that again.' So, a serial killer of chidren?
- Team Order is making a very early appearance this week!
- And it looks like James is fresh from court.
- A racist serial killer of children? This just gets worse and worse!
- Cross Arms Pub, Deptford SE8 Wednesday 12 April
- So Sean was the son of a policeman. Double ouch!
- MIU Central HQ, Wednesday 12 April
The boys will be off out to track Sean's movements shortly.
- St Justin's Church Hall, Poplar E1 Wednesday 12 April
- That guy Darren runs a talent agency? He doesn't look capable!
- Oh shite! Another boy's been killed. Well, it wasn't Darren who did it because Ronnie and Matt were interviewing him.
- Police Press Conference - we've not seen many of them.
- Marcus Wright, the security guard, seems a bit dodgy to me. It's the way he claims to have forgotten about the second boy.
- Oh boy! He did it - and he's a religious crank...
- Ronnie looks like he's barely keeping his temper under control.
- Double shite! The CPS apparently put the wrong man away.
- James looks like he wants to throw up.
- Alesha: If Marcus Wright is guilty, it can't be your fault.
LOVE the way she always has faith in James. She looks like she wants to hug hum.
- James is going to take this very hard, and George'll probably go spare!
- CPS Monday 18 April
- Dillon looks like a right thug! And his brief looks like a right smarmy git. No wonder James seems unimpressed by their threats to sue him for wrongful imprisonment, etc.
- Ooh! The brief's got a witness statement from a Mrs Janice Hunter which would have proved Dillon's innocence, but James has never seen it. I don't think he's lying. Alarm bells are ringing!
- Dillon's going to sue for £300k? He'll be lucky!
- Alesha looks thoughtful when Dillon claims that James tampered with the evidence.
- Then she reminds Dillon of his criminal record for beating up boys of ethnic minority.
Love her coolness.
- Alesha is definitely alarmed, though, when James snaps at Dillon and says that now he knows how the boys he beat up felt (because Dillon got beaten up in prison).
- Ah! James and Alesha going through boxes of paperwork - reminds me of 'Unsafe' - and James won then too.
- James tells Alesha there were 8 or 9 of them working on the Dillon case during its busiest months, but his lead assistant was Claudia Martin, who's since quit the CPS.
- Craddock & Shoenmann's, Lincoln's Inn Fields WC2, Tuesday 19 April
- Alesha gone to see Claudia, who says she couldn't keep up with James' intense pace.
I don't like her - I don't trust her.
- James tells Alesha three of his old team quit the CPS saying they were overworked and underpaid.
Alesha: Never!
LOL
- James is now wondering if the police didn't hand in Mrs Hunter's statement since they wanted Dillon put away as much as the CPS. Methinks he'd better not repeat that in front of Natalie!
- George and Natalie discussing the missing statement. Natalie says she trusts Ronnie, and George says he trusts his people and they've nothing to hide. But someone buried it!
- MIU HQ, Thursday 21 April
James is hassling Ronnie about who he gave the statement to, and which day. This cannot end well!
- Matt asks James if he thinks it's their fault the statement is missing, and James tactfully tries to ask Ronnie if he might have made a mistake (without mentioning that Ronnie was still drinking back then). Predictably Matt leaps to Ronnie's defence, and then Natalie gets annoyed. Not good for Police/CPS relations!
- CPS, Monday 25 April
George tells James that the Dillon Defence team had a copy of the schedule which listed the statement three days after it was given. So James gets excited, thinking they can check who was in reception that day and check with that person. He rushes out to reception, ignoring George's cautionary "James" - only to find Matt and Ronnie waiting to arrest him. Gulp!
- To Matt's credit, he doesn't sound too happy at arresting James - despite the fact that the two men have never got on as well as James and Ronnie do.
- Alesha comes around the corner just in time to witness James being arrested - on suspicion of perverting the course of Justice. AS IF!!
- I do *not* like seeing James in the dock at the Bail Hearing.
- It's good to see Alesha's there for James' Bail Hearing, though.
- So who's the new bloke? It's not *the* new bloke (ie the one taking over from Ben Daniels).
- James, don't interrupt the CPS idiot, even if he *is* an idiot!
- James asks to be allowed to conduct his defence from Counsels' Row, and Kane objects. *rolls eyes* Fortunately the Judge is a sensible fellow and says the jury won't get confused.
- Alesha looks less than impressed by the sight of Kane at James' desk!
- Alesha has a little catch in her voice when she tells Kane "This is my office'. George looks pained, but nevertheless tells her that they've made a space for her in the Paralegals' Office for the time being.
- Ugh! Hate the way Kane makes Alesha leave before she can even gather up her stuff.
- Oooh! James and Alesha are meeting surreptitiously in the street. Of course Alesha's first question is to ask how he's doing!
- James is asking Alesha to go through the Personnel files to find out who was in the office 6 years ago. Alesha anxiously tells him that she's not allowed near their office, and he turns up the pressure by saying it's his only hope. She sounds despairing - and then shakes her head in a disbelieving way when he walks away before she can object further.
- OMG! He puts the piece of paper containing the list of names into her hand and then folds his other hand over the top of hers. *flails*
- Alesha goes into the office after hours to get the files for James - and then nearly gets caught by Kane when he returns for his mobile. My heart was in my mouth when he heard the rustling of paper and started to go and investigate, and I sighed a huge sigh of relief when his phone rang and distracted him.
- Crown v Steel Trial Day 3, Wednesday 4 May
Alesha looks very good in that pale blue shirt and black suit as Kane's questioning her.
- Alesha says James likes her to challenge him (brain goes to a naughty place! *coughs*) and she does so often. Then she obviously wishes she'd phrased that differently because she tries to correct herself.
- Kane asks if she challenged him during the Don Marsh case and she says she doesn't remember. What I want to know is how he knows that - because James and Alesha had that conversation about James lying about Mike being willing to testify IN THE STREET! One of them must have documented it.
- Kane asks Alesha if James has every asked her to do anything dishonest or made her feel compromised in the eyes of the law. She gives James a long look before answering with a firm 'No.'
- After she's been questioned, Alesha sits with George at the back of the court.
- Oooh! Claudia and James had an affair?!
I love how ruthless James is about his own affair for the sake of Truth and Justice. And I love how Kane is completely blind-sided by the news. HA!
- Alesha's face when Claudia accuses him of using her, and says she'd have done anything for him. (I bet those Personnel files were weighing on her conscience!)
- After those revelations, Alesha meets up with James (on the street again), to hand over the Personnel files she snagged. And she is clearly not a happy camper, but James is oblivious.
- When he asks if this is all of the files, and she doesn't answer, he looks up and says 'What?', but I'm pretty sure he knows *what*!
- Alesha (of Claudia when James says he had to discredit her): So she was just collateral damage.
James: Yeah
Bet Alesha's wondering if he'd do the same thing to her in the cause of a case - after all, he did it to Matt in 'Anonymous'.
- Crown V Steel Trial Day 8, Wednesday 11 May
James practically scoffs at Kane when he asks if James knows his success rate. As if it's about keeping score! (It's 93%)
- Alesha's expression when Kane asks if winning is what drives James - she's beginning to suspect it is - but she does James a disservice.
- Oh and now I want to kick Kane's arse for bringing up the Merrick case! *hugs Alesha*
- James: I do my best to work within a system that I cherish and respect.
Thing is, he really *does* cherish and respect it!
- Crown V Steel Trial Day 10 Friday 13 May
- Kane and co go into a panicked huddle when James calls Salyl Ann Hope to the witness box.
Heh heh heh
- Alesha's clearly wondering who SAH is - but Claudia knows...
- James is totally in his stride now!
- Ha! I knew it!! When Claudia said she'd have done anything for James, I knew that she'd have buried the statement. That's something Alesha would *never* do - no matter how much she cares for James.
- Kane's face - he knows he's lost.
- Crown V Steel Verdict Monday 16 May
James looks nervous about the verdict - even though he must be fairly confident he's won.
- His relief is palpable - and then he looks over at Alesha and George, who're also obviously very relieved!
- George: Can't blame yourself, James.
Oh yes he can!!
- James: I should have known.
I knew James would consider it his fault that the wrong man was convicted and more children died.
- CPS Press Conference - James quits. Entirely predictably!
I wonder if Alesha tried to talk him out of it...
- Alesha: It's weird, coming to work and you're not there.
James smiling: You'll get used to it. Bet you'll have forgotten I was even there in a few weeks.
Alesha: Don't be silly. It'll be a few days, once I've cleared your desk.
Her shaky laugh belies that.
- Kiss her! KISS HER! KISS HER!
C'mon James, stop drawing out the moment!
- And he doesn't! George rings, and interrupts them. And Alesha goes away, leaving James with a tear in his eye.
Goodbye James Steel, you were marvellous!
