It was Rose's idea to look into the Heart of the TARDIS in order to get what she wanted (ie back to Nine). Don't forget the ship resisted her for some time before letting Rose open up the console.
She didn't know the specifics, no, but she knew that looking into the heart of the TARDIS was going to make a telepathic connection between herself and the ship, because Nine told her that in Boomtown, when Blon/Margaret looked into it, and she knew that's where the TARDIS' power came from - and she must have realised the TARDIS would respond to the most dominant thought/desire in her head - to get back to the Doctor - otherwise why would she bother trying to open up the Heart in the first place?? She knew from Boomtown that opening the Heart of the TARDIS wasn't going to make the ship fly - I've always assumed she thought she'd have the power to tell the TARDIS where to go (ie back to the Gamestation)...
You bring up a very interesting point... Rusty recycles things in short order. Boomtown introduced the "Heart of the TARDIS" trope, which was then used for the finale. next season "Alternate Universe" was introduced- with Cybermen- and then used in the finale when we (DIDN'T!) lose Rose. Third Season, What was it there? The year that never happened, time turning back, ??? There was something, but I'm missing it.
Fourth Season- we again have Alt!Universe crossover with the Time Beetle and "Turn left"... AND the return of that (NOT!) "Lost" person.
So- what is RTD planning with from THIS episode that will prove to be the trope for the regeneration finale? The shift of Time from the Doctor's point of view? His descent into madness?

The whole Chameleon Arch/Fobwatch scenario with Ten/John Smith and Yana/Saxon Master...

That's what I'd guess... My assumption is that his change of the Time Line in 2059 is just going to ripple backwards until it causes changes in his personal Time Line that unleash something (eg allow the Master to come back).
D'oh, Yes! The fobwatch! How could I have forgotten that, when I wanted to buy one of the fancy ones for myself?
Hee, I don't know.
Hmmm, ripples backwards through time, THAT could have some very interesting consequences.
It cold! I'd like to see RTD do that, but fear he'll do something much less interesting!
By the way, I've friended you so your comments are no longer screened. I know you don't comment here that often, but I've chatted with you often enough on Nea's LJ. (And no need to feel obliged to reciprocate!)
True, so often he promises "EPIC!!!!11eleventy one!!" and then... well, we get Tinkerbell Jeebus Doctor... O_O
Why, Thank you! Of Course I'll add you as well, though I'll warn you right now, my posts wander all over the place and aren't as interesting as yours... (Unless you count dragons... but those posts are public anyway. :P )
