Tonight, you arrested my mind. / When you came to my defence.
Alesha’s belief in James is rock-solid: she’s known him long enough to be certain that he didn’t make a mistake in prosecuting Slade, and she wishes that James would accept her implicit offer to defend him at the disciplinary hearing. She decides that she will give him a ring later, after she finishes work for the day, and make the offer explicit, assure him that he has her support.
In the pub, when he says ‘we’, she feels a surge of joy and relief that he’s now prepared to accept her help. In the office, when he calls her ‘a friend’ she wonders if her grin is as goofy as it feels. Outside the office, as they prepare to go their separate ways, he thanks her:
“I appreciate you believing in me,” he says, his hands on her shoulders as he looks down into her upturned face.
“It isn’t hard,” she answers, smiling up at him.
Then he hugs her, quick and hard, and she feels as if she might explode with happiness.

Belief, makes things true. / Things like you, you and I.
Once Slade is safely under lock and key again, James offers to take her out for dinner, and Alesha must look as surprised as she feels because he elaborates:
“I wanted to thank you properly,” he says. “I wouldn’t have got through this without you. Knowing that you believed in me one hundred percent stopped me from losing faith in myself. Slade scared me.” His voice is low on the last few words, and she thinks he might be ashamed of the admission.
“I can understand that,” Alesha says softly. “He seemed bent on destroying everything you’ve worked for over the last ten years. That would scare me, too.”
He nods. “So, dinner?” he asks, reverting to the previous subject.
“Thank you, James, I’d love to.”
His smile lights up his whole face and she fights a sudden urge to kiss him. Not in the office! she tells herself sternly, ignoring the implicit admission that if they weren’t in the office she might well have kissed him.
He names a restaurant and a time to meet, and she goes back to her own office feeling as if she wants to sing, but instead she reminds herself that it’s only dinner, and anyway he’s her boss. While she might believe in his ability to do his job brilliantly, she doesn’t believe in the possibility of him seeing her as more than a friend. But his friendship is quite enough, and besides, Alesha doesn’t believe in pining over what she cannot have.
