Summary: The Doctor reflects on what Martha Jones will mean to him.

Author Notes: Yeah. Not sure where this plot bunny came from, but once it bit me, it wouldn't let go until I wrote the fic. It's unbeta'd.

He looks at her as they stand on the hospital balcony and she speaks of her family, and he knows she'll be coming with him when this is over. Not straight away, but later today. But more than that, he knows that she won't stay with him: she's got her family and her career, and both are too important to her to be abandoned lightly. As he looks at her, though, he can see her timeline and it's tightly entwined with his: she will walk away from him, but she will come back to him, or he will come back to her, over and over again. He doesn't look too hard, doesn't want to see the details because then he won't be able to act, but he can see she'll be a part of his life for a long time to come, past his next regeneration, even. He closes his eyes on glimpses of darkness, and thinks, instead, of Romana and Sarah Jane; if the opportunity arises, he will introduce Martha to Sarah Jane. He's sure they'll get on well: both of them are independent, capable women. Neither of them needs him, but he thinks that he will soon need Martha as much as he needs Sarah Jane: he needs another human heart that's capable of loving him in spite of everything he can, and possibly will, do to her. He looks at Martha again, sees how tiny she is in stature, but how large her heart is: big enough for her whole planet, and he hopes she will also find room in there for a lonely, old alien.
