Martha glanced around the hall one last time and sighed with relief: everything was ready for the Brigadier's 80th birthday party.

A strong pair of arms slid around her waist and Jack spoke in her ear. "What's got my little nightingale sighing? I thought you'd be happy today."

"That was a sigh of relief," she answered, turning around in his arms and wrapping her own around him. "It's all ready now, we just have to wait for the guests to arrive."

"And they're expected at six?" Martha nodded. "And it's only just after five," he noted.

She tilted her head back to look up into his face, seeing a familiar glint there. "Let me guess, you've got plans for how to spend some of that hour?" she asked, smirking.

"Well, we both need to get changed still, and that'll involve taking off our clothes, so - " He left the sentence hanging, his smirk matching hers.

Martha stood up on tiptoes to kiss him quick and hard. "Come on then before someone decides they need me to do one last thing for them." She span away, grabbing his hand and tugging him towards the door.

By the time they reached the building that housed the Infirmary, Martha's lab and her office, where their party clothes were waiting, they were both a little giggly and breathless with anticipation. It had been a long, tiring week for Martha as she'd spent it in getting Dr Palmer up to speed with everything he needed to know about being Torchwood's resident doctor, and the process was not helped by both Gwen and Mickey being injured by a rogue Weevil on the Tuesday evening.

She'd handed over the keys to her rented flat that morning, then she and Jack had driven back to London; it seemed weird to consider that she'd no longer be spending Sunday lunchtime to Wednesday lunchtime in Cardiff. There were some things that she wouldn't miss, such as the long drives to and from Cardiff and London, but there were other things she'd miss intensely, including no longer sharing her bed with Jack.

When they returned to the drill hall an hour later, Jack impossible resplendent in a tux and Martha in her brand new deep gold dress, they were promptly accosted by Colonel Mace.

"Ah, Jones, there you are. Tell me, are we expecting to see the Doctor this evening?"

"He did say he'd try to stop off," Martha answered, "but you can never tell with his sort of lifestyle."

"Well keep an eye out, will you?"

"Yes sir." Martha watched him march away briskly.

"Is it me, or is he a little nervous at the prospect of seeing the Doctor?" asked Jack.

"It's not you," she told him. "He and the Doctor didn't exactly hit it off the first time they met, and it wasn't the Colonel's fault, either."

"Ah." Before Jack could ask for any more details he saw Martha straighten up and an intense expression appear on her face. He turned, following her gaze, and saw an older man with white hair and a beard entering the hall; the man was leaning on a walking stick and he had an older woman at his side, holding his free arm.

"The Brig," Martha said quietly. She grabbed Jack's hand and led him over to formally introduce him to the legendary Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart.

Once the introductions had been made, Martha helped the Brigadier into the seat that had been set aside for him as the Guest of Honour, while Jack led Doris Lethbridge-Stewart to the seat beside her husband. Colonel Mace appeared a few moments later, to be gently teased by the Brigadier for his over-formal manner.

"This is a party, old chap, so do try to relax," chided Sir Alistair.

Jack watched from the sidelines as Martha began circulating amongst the newly arriving guests, checking that everyone was okay.

"Our girl's doing her usual good job, I see," said a quiet voice in Jack's ear, and he turned, surprised that the Doctor had snuck up beside him while he'd been watching Martha.

There was a mixture of pride and affection in the Lord's expression as he gazed at the young doctor.

"Hello Doc, good to see you." Jack hugged him heartily. "Snappy new suit, you've got there," he commented with a grin, feeling the dark green material between his finger and thumb.

"Thanks," answered the Doctor, his attention on Martha again.

"Hey, you okay?" asked Jack, concerned, as he caught a glimpse of pain in the Time Lord's dark eyes at the mention of the new suit.

"I'm fine, I'm always fine," the Doctor answered.

Before Jack could challenge his ridiculous assertion, the Time Lord stepped away as Martha, who'd just spotted him, hurried over.

"Martha Jones, you're a sight for sore eyes," he murmured as he picked her up in a hug.

"You don't look so bad yourself," she answered with a small giggle, before kissing his cheek. "Come on, none of this lurking in corners, come and say hello to the Brig, he's been anxious to meet this incarnation of you."

Jack watched as Martha led the Doctor across the hall to where the Brigadier and his wife were surrounded by well wishers, and resolved to find out later why the Time Lord was unhappy. As he watched Martha, he couldn't help wishing that she wasn't giving up her part time role at Torchwood; he'd enjoyed working with her, and he was still disappointed that he'd never got around to persuading her to join him and Ianto for some fun and games.

He was so caught up in his thoughts that he lost track of Martha for a while, and the next time he saw her, she and the Doctor were talking to a blond, curly-haired man in a multi-coloured coat, and Jack went over to join them.

"I wasn't expecting you to be here," the Doctor said. "I don't remember me being here as you."

Martha looked curiously at the blond-haired man. "You're an earlier incarnation of the Doctor, then?" she asked him, sounding slightly uncertain.

"I am indeed," he answered grandly. "The sixth incarnation, at your service." He carried her hand to his lips and kissed it, and Martha fought the urge to giggle at the sight of her Doctor's stormy expression.

"Dr Martha Jones," she said, "how do you do?"

"Delighted to meet you," he answered.

"You're the incarnation Evelyn travelled with, aren't you?" she asked.

"You've met Evelyn?" he asked, sounding really pleased.

"I have," she answered, glancing up and noticing the softened expression on her Doctor's face. "She's planning to be here this evening."

"Good," answered both Doctors as one, and she sensed some of the tension in her Doctor easing at the news.

"Oh, there's Liz," Martha said, spotting Dr Shaw entering the hall. "I think she and Evelyn were coming from Cambridge together, I'll go and see." She hurried away, leaving the two Doctors watching her.

"Did you have to wear that coat?" asked the tenth incarnation in a slightly peevish tone.

"What's wrong with my coat?" demanded the sixth indignantly. "It's colourful, which is just right for a party. Anyway, you're wearing trainers with a suit."

"Oi, there's nothing wrong with trainers, they're good for running in," retorted the tenth hotly.

"Now, now, gents," Jack said, deciding he should intervene before they came to blows. "This is supposed to be a party, remember?"

Before either one could respond to Jack's intervention, Martha returned with Liz and Evelyn, whom she introduced before taking them over to speak to the Brigadier. As she moved away, she gave Jack a look which clearly entreated him to keep the two Doctors from fighting.

Just as the Captain was wondering just how to keep the two calm, a further interruption was provided by the arrival of an older man dressed in a black suit and wearing black framed glasses.

"Six, Ten," he said in a sort of drawl as he addressed the two Doctors. "Hello Jack."

To the Captain's amazement, the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor pulled him into a tight hug and then kissed him until he was breathless.

"Hello Doc," Jack gasped when he was finally released.

"Oh really!" exclaimed the sixth incarnation, flouncing away to where Evelyn and Liz were helping themselves to food from the buffet.

Martha rejoined Jack and the Doctors just in time to hear the tenth demanding to know which incarnation the eleventh was. Jack had to answer for him because the older Doctor immediately pulled Martha into a rib-crushing hug before kissing her even more enthusiastically than he'd kissed Jack. The Captain watched, a huge grin on his face, which was made even bigger by the thunderous look the tenth incarnation was giving the eleventh.

"Hello Martha," said the older Doctor when he finally released her.

"Hello Doctor." All three men noticed that she was flushed from the greeting she'd just received, and they all felt that she looked even more beautiful as a result.

"What do you think you're doing, kissing my companions?" hissed the tenth incarnation angrily.

"They're my companions too," retorted the eleventh.

"Come on you two, don't fight, party remember?" said Jack. "Anyway, if you want to kiss me and Martha, there's nothing stopping you," he told the tenth incarnation.

He grinned at the Time Lord's shocked expression, then grabbed the eleventh's hand. "Come and dance with me," he suggested, gesturing at the area of the hall that had been set aside for dancing.

"Gladly," responded the eleventh with a grin. "Coming Martha?"

"I'll be there shortly," she answered, then turned to the tenth incarnation. "Come on." She grabbed his hand and led him through the hall.

"Where are we going?" he asked, bewildered.

"Somewhere quiet so you can tell me what's wrong, and don't bother telling me that nothing is, because I know you better than that."

She led him to her office, resolutely pushing aside her memories of the use that she and Jack had made of it a couple of hours earlier, and they sat down together on the sofa.

"Tell me," Martha said, taking his hand in hers.

"I don't want to spoil the party for you," he protested.

"Silly fool," she said affectionately. "I'm your Doctor, remember, so let me help you feel better. Even if I can't cure the problem, I can listen."

He gave her a shaky smile and then began to talk.
