This story is a direct continuation of 30 Days with Martha Jones: Spirit

~~~~~~
Jack put Martha to bed, then went back to the Hub once she was asleep; he didn't think she was lying about what she'd heard, but he did wonder if over-work and exhaustion had caught up with her. He checked the CCTV recording for the period following his departure from the Hub: Martha was the only person visible on the screen for entire three hours, but her conversation with Owen had been recorded, and it definitely sounded like Owen. Jack played it back several times to be sure and there was no doubt in his mind that it sounded like Torchwood's former doctor.
Like Martha, Jack remembered the creature that had been tormenting the staff at CERN, but none of the internal monitors they had registered an alien presence: Martha had been the only person present in the main area of the Hub during her conversation with Owen.
He headed back to Martha's flat in a thoughtful mood, wondering if they were going to have any more ghostly visitors: a lot of Torchwood people had over the years that he'd been working there, and he didn't really want to see or hear an endless parade of them, even if they were only coming to say goodbye.
Jack slipped into bed beside Martha, smiling when she murmured in her sleep and snuggled up against him, her right arm sliding across his chest to hold him.
But he wasn't smiling when Martha woke with a cry of terror at 2am.
"What is it?" he asked urgently, pulling her into his arms as she began to cry.
"Tosh. I saw Tosh die," she answered between gulping sobs.
"What did you see?" he asked.
"She was standing in her work area, trying to help Owen to divert the fuel at the nuclear power plant and someone - " She paused, frowning in thought. "Someone called Gray shot her in the stomach. Oh god, Gray was your brother?" she asked, her voice a whisper.
"Yes, Gray was my younger brother."
"He pulled out all the wires on the computers, then taunted her before throwing away her handheld computer. She had to crawl across the floor and roll down the stairs to reach her computer so she could contain the nuclear meltdown." She clung to Jack.
"Why did he do that, Jack? Why did your brother kill Tosh?"
Jack sighed heavily, then pulled Martha to lie down beside him, her head on his shoulder and his arm around her body.
"It's a long and painful story," he said, then told her what had happened when he'd been a boy, and then about John Hart finding his brother years later, and all about how Gray wanted to destroy his brother's life because he blamed Jack for what had happened to him.
By the time he reached the part of his story where he had cryogenically stored his unconscious brother, he was in tears and Martha was trying to comfort him.
"Oh Jack, I am so sorry." She reached up to dry his tears, then kissed him gently. "We should try to get some more sleep," she said.
"Yeah." Jack didn't tend to sleep much, but he felt drained now.
The next morning Martha went back to working on the data about the unseasonable hay fever attacks; Jack was in his office, Gwen was at the Rift Monitor and Ianto was in the Archive when Martha heard her name spoken. Looking up she saw Tosh standing at the foot of the stairs; the Japanese woman was semi-visible, more like a holographic image than anything else.
"Tosh?" She was surprised to find her voice was so steady.
"Hello Martha."
"What are you doing here?" asked Martha. "More to the point, how can you be here?"
Tosh laughed softly. "I don't know any more than you do how I'm here. But I can tell you why. I came to say goodbye."
"Like Owen," Martha said softly.
"You've seen Owen?" Tosh asked eagerly.
"No. But I heard him last night. He also came to say goodbye." She frowned in thought. "I don't understand it though, it's six months since you died, why come and say goodbye now?"
Tosh shrugged. "To me it's not six months," she answered, "and although I don't know why or how I'm here, I can tell you that I felt drawn to you somehow." She saw Martha opening her mouth to ask another question and guessed what it was. "I can't explain it properly, I can only tell you that there is something about you that pulled me to you, like an iron filing is pulled towards a magnet."
Martha shook her head. "I thought I'd seen and dealt with some weird stuff in the time since I met the Doctor, but this definitely takes the biscuit."
"I didn't frighten you, did I?"
"No," Martha said. "I was a bit freaked out by the conversation with Owen last night, but it was night and I was on my own in the Hub. But Jack, Gwen and Ianto are all here, and - Wait," she exclaimed, interrupting herself. "I should call them."
Tosh shook her head. "I've already seen them, but they couldn't see me."
"Oh. Should I tell them I've seen you?" Martha asked.
"That's up to you," Tosh answered. "If you think it would make them feel better, or help them in some way, then tell them. But it may be better to say nothing, let them move on."
She seemed to sit down on the stairs. "Are you working here permanently now?"
"No. I'm the official UNIT-Torchwood Liaison Officer now, so I'm here part time and in London part time, but we'll be getting a new doctor in a couple of months, so I'll be working with UNIT in London and just coming down to Cardiff once a month, unless anything big comes up."
"Oh. Did Jack replace me yet?"
"Well, he's just taken on someone to do technical and computer stuff."
"I'm glad he's found someone, and I'm glad you're here to help him too." Tosh seemed less substantial now. "I think I have to go now. Goodbye Martha."
"Goodbye Tosh." Her voice was barely above a whisper as the other woman faded from view. Martha realised she was crying and dug in her pocket for a tissue; she'd just finished drying her eyes when Jack appeared at the top of the stairs.
"Martha?" he said, a little uncertainly.
"Jack." She tried to smile, but knew she'd failed when he hurried down the stairs to her side.
"What's wrong?"
"I've just seen Tosh," she answered. "She came to say goodbye as well."
"Oh god!" He wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her head. "Are you okay?" he asked.
"Yeah, well, I will be in a minute." She clung tightly to him, wondering why she had heard Owen and seen Tosh, and no one else had, and wondering what had drawn them both to her now. Then she wondered if she'd ever find out the answer to those questions, and she knew that she might not.
