As Martha lay beside Jack with her head on his shoulder, she felt him playing with her hair and smiled a little.

"So why don't you tell me why my little nightingale was such a cranky bear last night, when I rang?" he asked.

She told him about the virus and working flat out for 48 hours to find a cure. Then she'd finally got to sleep only to be woken in the middle of the night by the arrival of the TARDIS, and how the eleventh Doctor had regenerated.

"So what's the new one like?" asked Jack, his voice full of curiosity.

"Short brown hair, grey eyes. Looks a few years younger than the eleventh incarnation did, say 55 rather than 60. Sort of ruggedly handsome, rather than boyishly so. He's switched from suits back to jeans."

"Sexy?" Jack enquired, a teasing note in his voice.

"Oh yeah," Martha answered fervently, "and a hell of a kisser again.

"He didn't hang about making an impression then," Jack said.

She lifted her head to look at his face. "You don't mind, do you?" she asked anxiously.

"Why would I mind?" he asked, sounding genuinely surprised.

She shrugged. "I just thought, you know - "

Jack pulled her face down and kissed her. "I'd never be jealous of you," he told her.

"Good." She glanced at the clock on her bedside table. "We should go and collect Mickey soon or he'll think we've forgotten him, and that wouldn't be a good way to persuade him to join Torchwood."

"Yeah, you're right," Jack said, sounding a bit reluctant all the same.

"C'mon, Captain Cheesecake." Martha giggled at the outraged expression on Jack's face, then rolled away from him quickly before he could grab her, which had the desired effect of getting him to move off the bed. She skipped out of his reach, moving across the room and heading for the bathroom.

"I'll get you for that, Dr Jones!" Jack called after her as he heard the bathroom door shut.

When she returned a few moments later, Jack was getting dressed again.

"Don't think I won't punish you for that cheekiness, missy," he growled.

Martha just smirked at him as she began to get dressed also. "Got you to move, though, didn't I?" she asked.

"Yes you did," he agreed.

Half an hour later they were at Roald Dahl Plass, Mickey included, taking the Invisible Lift down into the Hub.

"Wow! You've got a dinosaur!" Mickey exclaimed, eyes wide with surprise as he took in the sight of Myfanwy flying around the central space. "That's seriously cool."

Jack grinned widely. "Welcome to Torchwood, Mickey Smith."

As the paving stone reached the ground, Gwen came hurrying over. "Jack, we're getting reports of a UFO over the Brecon Beacons. Several people have rung the police to report it."

Jack smirked at Mickey. "Here we go, what more could you ask for on your first visit?" He turned back to Gwen. "Okay, we'll go and check it out. You coming? Where's Ianto?"

"Here sir," said the young Welshman as he hurried over to join them.

They took the Invisible Lift straight back up to the Plass, and headed to the car park where the team kept the SUV. Mickey took one look and snorted with laughter when he saw the Torchwood name emblazoned on the side.

"I thought you lot were supposed to be a secret organisation?" he asked in a mocking tone.

"Leave it," growled Jack as he climbed into the driver's seat. "Martha, you're with me."

She gave him a nod and climbed into the front passenger seat while the others climbed into the back. Gwen passed him a GPS device and he hooked it up, then pulled out of the car park and headed for the National Park.

Conversation on the half hour drive was restricted to a discussion of the possible type of UFO that had been spotted, and Martha noticed that Mickey was largely silent. She wondered if he was regretting coming down to Cardiff and hoped that Jack wasn't going to freeze him out because of a bit of teasing.

"Here we are," said Jack as he pulled into the Beaufort Rise car park.

Everyone could immediately see that there was a strange object flying above the park. It looked like a gigantic humming bird, and they all stared at it in disbelief for several moments before climbing out of the SUV.

"What is it?" asked Gwen wonderingly.

"No idea," answered Ianto, "but I don't think it's alien."

"It's a ornithopter of some sort," Mickey said.

"A what?" chorused everyone else.

"An aircraft that flies by flapping its wings," Mickey answered, shading his eyes with his hand as he gazed up at the thing above them.

"How do you know that?" asked Martha curiously.

"Saw 'em, in the parallel universe."

"I think we should check it out, nevertheless," Jack said firmly, striding off in the general direction of the thing. The others followed him, Gwen and Ianto pausing every so often to gaze up at the strange aircraft.

"I think I'm in the doghouse," Mickey confided to Martha as they followed Jack.

"No you're not," she said positively.

He gave her a disbelieving look. "Yeah, right. Whatever."

Martha slipped her arm through his. "I promise you, you're not. Given he wants you to work for him, it doesn't make sense for him to antagonise you, does it?"

"I s'pose."

"Trust me." She slid her hand down to his and squeezed his fingers, then let go of his arm and moved to join Jack, who was talking to a blonde haired young woman wearing a very old fashioned jacket and trousers.

"Where did he get this thing?" Jack asked.

"He built it himself," the young woman answered. "He's a bit of a genius when it comes to building gadgets and things."

"Well your friend is worrying the locals - we've had several reports of a UFO out here."

"I will tell him, when he comes back down." The young woman looked around at Martha and the others. "Are you the police?"

"Something like that," Martha answered.

"Oh. I am sorry we have caused trouble, that was not our intention."

"It's okay," Martha assured her. She glanced over at Jack, who seemed to have lost interest in the conversation, and she wondered what had got into him in the last hour.

"If you advise your friend that it's best he lets the authorities know if he's going to be taking his ornithopter up again, then I'm sure everything will be fine next time," the young doctor said, watching as Jack walked back towards the SUV. Ianto went after him, and Martha saw that Gwen was talking to Mickey, both of them watching the flying machine above their heads.

"I'm Martha Jones," she said, offering the young woman her hand with the feeling that someone ought to be maintaining good relations.

"Charlotte Pollard, but all my friends call me Charley."

"Nice to meet you Charley. Who's your friend?"

"Oh, that's the Doctor."

Martha's head snapped round so fast she almost gave herself whiplash. "The Doctor?" she asked, placing unmistakeable emphasis on the definite article.

"Yes." Charley looked at Martha's expression. "Do you know him?"

Martha chuckled. "Oh yes. I travelled with him for a time."

"You had better come and say hello, then. I think he is coming down now."

She led them up the crest of the hill and down on the far side Martha spotted the TARDIS looking improbably at home amidst the rugged scenery. As they walked the ornithopter was lowering itself to the ground a dozen feet or so from the Police Box, then it settled down, the wings coming to a standstill. A man wearing a leather flying jacket and helmet climbed down out of the machine and came to meet them.

"Hello," he said, and smiled, and Martha decided that the Doctor's smiles were her undoing.
