Martha and Jack had a long talk at her flat after her encounter with the Doctor's ninth incarnation, and she'd agreed to talk to Tom about her relationship with him, and about Jack. The Captain had teased in a very gentle way about her 21st century hang-ups about sex, but she knew he wasn't mocking her for growing up in a different era.

"I'll tell you something, little nightingale," he said as they sat together on Martha's sofa drinking coffee, "I've been waiting for you since the moment we met, but I'm still sure the wait will be worth it."

She blushed; although she was quite used to Jack's habit of flirting with anyone and everyone, remarks like that tended to leave her feeling embarrassed as well as flattered that he wanted her.

"What about Ianto?" she asked. "I don't want to make things awkward between us, not when I still have to work with him."

"You won't," Jack assured her, pulling her closer, "I promise you that."

"Good."

She was trying not to think about that conversation as she worked in her lab back in London, poring over some tissue samples that had been brought in for her analysis. There was a brief knock on the door behind her and she called an absent-minded 'Come in' without lifting her head from the microscope she was using.

"Dr Martha Jones, I presume?" said a voice behind her, and she started and looked up to find herself face to face with the legendary Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, still known to many at UNIT as 'the Brig', even though there had been other Brigadiers since his day.

"Yes sir!" she exclaimed, straightening up and offering her smartest salute.

He smiled. "Now, now, none of that young woman," he said, and she saw his eyes were twinkling with amusement. "I understand you've travelled with the Doctor and that you work with the Torchwood people?"

"Yes sir."

"What's the Doctor like these days?"

"Tall, young looking, well about mid-30s, wild brown hair, skinny as a rake. He usually wears a suit and tie, but he favours baseball boots to go with them, oh and long brown coat."

"Still personable, is he? Charismatic, even?" asked Sir Alistair, settling himself into a chair near Martha's work bench and folding his hands on top of his walking stick.

She nodded, wondering how much to say, and he cocked an eyebrow at her.

"I've met almost every one of his ten incarnations," he told her, "and he could be the very devil for charming the women, and some of the men too."

Martha grinned. "He still does that," she said.

She moved to sit next to him, sensing the old soldier was interested in talking for a while. They talked about the different incarnations they had met, comparing notes on his taste in clothes, and discussing his companions.

"I understand the Master came back, too, arrogant little man."

Martha couldn't help giving the Brigadier an amazed look at this description of the Time Lord who'd decimated the Earth. "Yes he did come back," she said quietly. She hadn't met the Brigadier during the year the Doctor had rewound: he'd already been killed by the Toclafane, trying to defend his wife and their friends when the Master's creatures had first descended on the Earth.

The old soldier put his hand on Martha's wrist, and she looked up, touched by the gesture. "I've heard all about what you did to save us all from the Master," he said. "I know I'm not alone in being very grateful for the sacrifice you made on our behalf, a sacrifice you made without most of us knowing anything about it. You're a very brave young woman, and I'm delighted to know that you're working for UNIT now." He slid his hand down and squeezed hers, and she felt tears prickling in her eyes.

"Thank you, sir."

He smiled at her. "Now, tell me about this business of being Torchwood Liaison Officer," he requested, "it can't be easy, being piggy in the middle between the two organisations."

Martha swallowed the lump in her throat. "It's not too bad, actually," she said, and explained how the role had arisen.

He listened attentively, asking questions occasionally, then nodded approvingly at the end of Martha's narrative.

"I don't approve of everything Torchwood has done in the past, but it seems clear to me that your friend Captain Harkness is doing his best to do things differently to the way they were done by Torchwood One. It's even clearer that in situations with the Daleks and the like, that it's a case of needing as many hands on deck as we can get."

He glanced up at the clock. "I must be going, but I'm glad to have had this chance to talk to you at last. You're doing excellent work, Dr Jones, and I hope the Doctor is proud of you. I know that I am."

"Thank you, sir."

He smiled and leaned in to whisper conspiratorially, "Brigadier is quite acceptable, especially from you."

"Thank you, Brigadier."

He got to his feet, then shook hands. "I daresay I'll see you at this bash they're organising for my birthday," he said. "Bring your friend the Captain with you, if you like. I should be interested to meet him."

"We'll be there," Martha assured him.

He gave her a nod, then went away, and Martha went back to her tissue samples, wondering what Jack would make of his invitation to the Brigadier's 80th birthday party. She decided that she would save telling him about it until she saw him at the weekend, wanting to see his face when she passed on the Brigadier's message.
